Cobra replicas

Boss in work is set on getting one, even tho' his "significant other" has said he can't...........so, respect!!!!

Anyway, he's looking for a ready built one and I wondered if anyone here knows anything about them, which ones are worth getting, from where, etc etc.

He's been to Hallmark on my recommendation and liked what he saw but reckoned a little pricey.

I have said he should go for a recognised maker like DAX and be prepared to get an older car, rather than some other copy.

What does anyone reckon......?

If you can be bothered....???

TIA

BTW we do have Christmas in Wales........ :xmas:  :xmas:

IMHO the advice you gave is pretty accurate. IIRC there was an article in a fairly recent kit mag which stated that some less honest folk are passing off various other Cobralike kits as Dax cars, and that any prospective buyer was more than welcome to check the authenticity with the factory.

Gardener Douglas cars also seem to have a good reputation too. It's a case of getting what you pay for really, I suppose it can be even easier to hide inadequate engineering under a curvy shape like a Cobra replica.

:0 Which is the best Cobra rep is as contentious as which is the best 7 rep (Westfield of course) and essentially you get what you pay for. Dax are well thought of and upper to mid-range in price. Pilgrim tend to be the Robin Hoods of the Cobra world and some truly dreadful examples exist. IMO he should set himself a price of between £12,000 to £20,000 and do some research.

He's found a "Southern Roadcraft" job that he's interested in. Has a Chevy 5.9 (5.7 marine engine, bored out)  :0  :0

Jag running gear etc etc

Anyone know anything about S.Rcraft??

My chum wants to sell his 6 (count em) litre Dax. It's nice and shiny in black, properly registered on an old S plate and has plenty of the right bits. It'll be well within your bosses budget.

Let me know if you think he'll be interested and I'll give you details.

Here she is:

You really need to hear it to properly appreciate it though.  :)

Hi Sam

Thanks for the thought - that's Steve's Cobra isn't it?

You are right it looks great and a real beast!

But

He was asking significantly more than £15k previously........??

Ooh. Yes it is. Didn't realise he was that famous...

He was asking significantly more than £15k previously........??

No he wasn't.  ???  He wants less than that, and always has done.

Tell you what. Tell your boss he wants £15k, we'll broker the deal between us and skim off the profit 50/50. Whaddya say?

A mate of mine had a Southern Roadcraft for a while, fitted with a small block chevy V8.

From what I recall: Southern Roadcraft are well built and well respected. They went out of production for a number of years but I believe that Madgwick Cars have now taken them on. You should be able to get some info from them. Don't know their number I'm afraid.

My boss bought a cobra replica and although it wasn't a Southern Roadcraft one (and I can't remember what he got in the end) he did mention that they were a very good make and had found a couple to go and look at before he got his present one. Make sure your boss is prepared to find new and exotic routes around any speed bumps if my bosses experience is anything to go by.

IMHO the best in the UK are Gardner Douglas followed by Dax and AK427.

Hawk may be good but IMO you are only paying for the originality of the design.

I too heard that Southern Roadcraft were quite good when they were around, but I've never seen one close up.

Never looked closely at a Magnum and wouldn't really want a Pilgrim as the chassis looks pants.

Girly Pants is right tho' this is one contentious area which has been the subject of the odd libel case IIRC.

cheers

Chrisbin,

The only other thing to add is: My mate had a dream for many years to own a Cobra - once he'd had one for a while he found out that reality wasn't as good as the dream and he sold it.

A bit like a boat really. Boat owners (apparently) only enjoy their boats for 2 days: The day that they buy them and the day they sell them.
