stu999 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Here's another worry for you. I was on a trackday at an airfield (Hullavington I think) and a modified MG Midget was there too. He'd put telescopic dampers and other suspension mods on, plus sticky slicks. It went round corners like no Midget has any right to do - until the wheel studs give out. The additional stress allowed by the grip of the slicks snapped all four studs on one hub.Maybe the fact that the studs were 40+ years old may not have helped either!! ;-) Quote
Justin767 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I've been using the ex Ginetta 15" slicks of late - 19/57x15 Michelin A set of 4 on eBay is £200 (or offer) so you can pick them up for about £45 a corner.. They are a pretty hard compound and I'd say have about the grip of R888s but are a darn sight cheaper for long days larking about on trackdays I'd guess that I'm going to get about a thousand track miles out of them on my Seight.. Bargain.. Shame I can't pick up cheaper petrol on eBay!! Quote
CL290005 Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I've been using the ex Ginetta 15" slicks of late - 19/57x15 Michelin They are a pretty hard compound and I'd say have about the grip of R888s !! I found once tyre got warm grip was better than my 888 as I noticed oil surge which was not happening with 888, so now another job. I think in the end I got mine for about 160 set same guy as Justin bought from. Quote
Justin767 Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 I think a good track day tyre, like the Avon ZZR, has more grip for more miles.. (My mates run them on their Caterhams and eek out a few meters on long corners..) The Michelin slicks probably have more grip for the Ginetta racers that get to use them at their best, then drop to a still decent level of grip for 3 or 4 trackdays, then get well past their best (like mine now!) but still have a fair bit of depth left down the tread depth marker holes.. So mine now spin up more than my hot R888s (Albeit in 225s v 190 slicks) but, as I'm more concerned with 'fun per buck' than lap time, I'm continuing with them until I can't keep up with my mates!.
