Sparkymart
Forgetting to drain the oil from the sump before turning the engine over on the stand. second most stupid thing was not moving you beer away from the oil slick..... :-)
Marto303
When we built our extension a couple of years ago I worked out a method of putting up a plaster board ceiling on my own with a prop one end and lifting the other end up to the rafters ( with the aid of a pair of step ladders, I am only 5ft nothing btw ). So the time came to put the first board up, I man handled it into place up against the prop, climbed the steps with this full sheet above my head and put one screw in to hold it, jumped off the steps to make sure the board was in the right place, as I looked up, bang the board smacked me straight in the face and put me on my with it on top of me Plan B was much safer using a prop at both ends of the board
Norman Verona
I suppose I could tell how I cut my thump in a table saw and my forefinger in the hedge trimmer. But you all know that.
Northwarks
.... I recovered a tipper truck with a 'seized engine', no oil on the dipstick, had no water in the header tank, drained less than a half a gallon of oil out of it, was asked to start stripping to get a view on the cost to fix. Was convinced the idiot had seized the engine so took the sump off and released the mains, still wouldn't turn, removed the big end caps, still wouldn't turn, removed the timing covers removed a gear, still wouldn't turn ... so by this time I called in the guy I worked for over to take a look .. we removed the gearbox/clutch and still couldn't turn the flywheel - then we both lay under the heap of s**t and realised we had overlooked one thing - the starter motor .. it was still engaged - removed it and the flywheel moved. The guy had started it and drove off, the starter remained engaged and it basically melted down the inside of the starter, he dipped his clutch after a few miles and it stalled the engine and it was never going to start again, he knew he'd not checked the oil and water so when I pointed out it had neither, we assumed it was seized for sure. I torqued everything backup, filled it with oil and water .. and a new starter .. and it fired up, despite the lack of oil the thing was still in daily use when I left 2 or 3 years later. It remained the biggest mistake I made engine rebuild wise ...
