well , if your car or van gets stolen make sure its at the address you tell your insurance its kept at  , because if its stolen from another address its not covered apparantly ,utter crap , another get out of paying out excuse ,waste of time having insurance tbh

heaven forbid you might leave it outside your girlfrends house , pub ,mates ,hotel etc for a night

Sounds like nonsense to me! Do the T&Cs say it has to be kept at an agreed location every night? Otherwise a test of reasonableness should be applied. Either way, a nice following of their complaints procedure resulting in the ombudsman will at least cost them a few hundred pounds win or lose.

yup cant believe for one minute its true but thats what was said ,not covered because it was not at the address on the policy ,makes a joke of insurance , im hearing more and more excuses from insurance companies so they dont have to pay out , some are just mind boggling where cases seem so clean cut then i find out they have gone 50/50

All tge insurers are bandits. .I had my van broken into a few years ago abd all my tool and clothes (as id been working away for 2 weeks) were stolen .I had paid nearly double for my policy to cover tools and equipment carried in the van . when I claimed I aas told my tools weren't covered as I'd left the van unattended, I even had a struggle to get them to pay for the damage to the the as they said if the tools weren't left in the van then it wouldn't have been targeted ....At least D*ik Turpin had the decency to wear a mask

Hi Steve,  Sadly this clause is often inserted into policies on order to reduce the total loss frequency.

If I can help in replacing any of your covers with "all risks" motor traders policy just let me know.

It's not a grain of comfort `I know but I have had this before - and I have had 10 years in the industry…...

It's "in the course of a journey". You are always covered, insurance company is just trying to pull a fast one!

When I renewed recently, I'm sure the question was phrased: 'Where is the vehicle most often kept' or something similar.

I've got a clause on one of mine that stipulates that overnight it must be in my garage if it is within 3 miles of my home.

is that on all car policies or more trader based policies? sounds dodgy to me but it wouldn't surprise me that they were trying it on. next thing you wont be able to park outside work

It's a private policy but it's there to ensure that you keep it garaged overnight (as declared on the proposal) wherever possible and effectively it stops people with garages full of junk parking their car round the corner and still claiming their discount for claiming that it's garaged every night guv - honest.

I had to get this taken off my Westy policy as often used to get taken off the trailer and left out overnight ready for an early start. No change in the premium but you do have to read the endorsements applied. The ironey being it was only not covered at my address - so fine if I left in the next road along overnight!!

In Steve's case, I think its more to do with reducing the premium - you really need to take a look at your schedule which should show any endorsements applied.

Not sure that James will agree with me but when I used to deal with a dealer group insurance the foundation was based on trust. In the last 30 years the public have abused that trust and we end up with the insurers not trusting the insured and putting this type of protection into policies.

My brother had the same on his M3. At his house it needed to be garaged over night.

I guess there could be some logic.

If you left a desirable car on your drive every night instead of garaged then perhaps a professional thief could target.  If left occasionally at different addresses then not so likely to be noticed.

As you say you do need to read the clauses carefully but I would expect a decent broker to highlight anything material such as this.

Norman, I dont disagree with you at all.  I Know of underwriters who have shaken hands with brokers in the Lamb Tavern at Leadenhall Market and then suffered a total loss of a ship - and then paid without even a policy being drafted.  Insurance market (that i used to work in) was always based upon utmost good faith and integrity.

With modern day policies there are many clauses aimed at reducing risk to the insurer - I am not saying this is right...

What is crucial is that Steve D's broker should have told him what is covered and, most importantly, what is exluded.
