WestyNottm Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Just had a call from Barclaycard querying recent transactions on my credit card. Apparently £1 was spent with an on-line store (presumably to check the card was valid), followed by three transactions totalling £1000 later the same day with a company shown as Who Internet. This turns out to be William Hill to the fraudster obviously has a gambling habit. It's comforting to know that I got the call in the first place (thankfully I don't gamble,on-line or otherwise - apart from my annual trip to the Cheltenham Festival!) so this was soon picked up by their systems. All transactions have now been refunded and a new card is on the way. I wonder how widespread this issue is? I suspect the card issuers are keen to keep this issue low-key otherwise we might all lose confidence in credit/debit cards. Quote
Norman Verona Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Not sure they're that bothered about publicity, they just get their losses back through the interest charges. Quote
M444TTB Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 This is good publicity for them. You simply can't stop these people just slow them down and put barriers in their way. My Nationwide credit card had one fraudulent transaction go through but they blocked several others. The transaction that did go through looked exactly like somewhere I'd have been though so I can't complain and it was refunded. Quote
Mark Stanton Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Sadly it happens all to often has happened to me twice now where my card has been cloned both times with just a couple of days of using Texaco garages for fuel - coincidence possibly but haven't used Texaco since and fortunately no more clone/fraud last one they purchased £2500 of TV's and electrical goods from RGB Direct not sure if goods were ever shipped to the dodgy address they gave, but I got my money back within hours Quote
Mark (smokey mow) Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I have to give credit to Barclaycard for the way they handle this type of thing. i had similar a couple of years back where an online payment was attempted with my card for a couple of hundred ££ on clothing, they deemed this suspicious activity on my account and blocked it. All was resolved without fuss and a new card arrived in post within 2 days. Quote
Darrell O'Neill Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Just be glad it's your credit card and not your bank card... Banks aren't quite as efficient .. Quote
WestyNottm Posted November 16, 2013 Author Posted November 16, 2013 Just be glad it's your credit card and not your bank card... Banks aren't quite as efficient .. That's why I seldom use my debit card on-line as I prefer the extra consumer protection of a credit card Quote
Mooch Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 I was alerted when a 99p iTunes download was charged to my account, which wasn't out of the ordinary at first glance but the MBNA chaps twigged that it was in the USA site, not UK and called me to check. Turned out is was a fraudulent test transaction to see if the card was live so it was cancelled there and then. I thought it was great service and was very reassuring. Quote
