iain m Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 After making a £600,000 loss last year the company now relocated in Crawley appears to be unconcerned about the decline in sales and are about to launch three electric motorbikes for 2014 to reverse this trend. They sold their Surrey site for a considerable sum, I don't suppose at the time they considered they would be using this to underwrite considerable losses. Quote
iain m Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 Correction, one is a conventional 750. Quote
Dommo Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 I should imagine those new models they're designing don't come cheap! Quote
peterg Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 They sold their Surrey site for a considerable sum, I don't suppose at the time they considered they would be using this to underwrite considerable losses. Really? my understanding was that Caterham leased the site from the Nearn family and so would have not gained anything from the sale... Quote
iain m Posted November 15, 2013 Author Posted November 15, 2013 They really are in trouble then. Quote
Norman Verona Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Not sure they're too bothered about the car manufacturing side, it's the name for F1 they're interested in now. If they do cease to trade I can see the queue forming as people try and buy the company from the receiver. Quote
dombanks Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 so how much is the car company worth then and would the buyer retain the name/heritage? Quote
Rory's Dad Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Caterham seem to me to be spreading themselves too wide - from the 7 to F1 without any sign of a solid and coherent business plan. I might be wrong of course Martin Quote
Norman Verona Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Martin, I suspect you're correct. It should be a very profitable business. The last time I looked at it the UK registrations needed another 600 cars exported or not registered as they were race cars. So they were making about 1500 cars a year. That was a few years ago when it was run by the Nearnes. Quote
pistonbroke Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Is that the ner nearnes of "got a good reason" fame .............. Quote
XTR2Turbo Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 Is it not most likely to be non capitalised development costs for the new Caterham / Renault joint venture. Quote
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 It's hardly dented their net worth when you look deeper into the accounts and with Fernades and a rich Shiek owning them, don't think money is a big issue. Lots of holding companies in the background. So probably development costs being written off for tax reasons :D Quote
Dave Eastwood (Gadgetman) - Club Chairman Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 It's too big and complex a group of companies now for off the cuff analysis to really mean much I suspect. There's been new models, relocation costs etc etc to fit into the picture. Quote
darve Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 It's too big and complex a group of companies now for off the cuff analysis to really mean much this. a reported loss in one company of a group can often be some tactical shifting of the numbers. the number at the bottom in the profit/loss account can be very misleading. you need to read every page of the accounts to get a sense off what's going on and even then you won't know everything about the numbers Quote
peet Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 They are in a temporary facility here in Crawley but they are looking for a permanent place here now. Wonder who owns the classic KAR 120C plate now then? Funny since the uninformed keep telling me that my cars a Caterham and that they're better than Westfields I don't like em anymore! Quote
