IanG1 Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Looking to get my daughter a 7 inch android tablet this Xmas. Budget is around £100 anybody recommend or have pointers to any bargains? Quote
bigals Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Were looking for the same thing Samsung galaxy 2 tablet on Android 4 system looks to be good value at about 120 . The galaxy 3 comes in more as is on the newer android 4.2 system but costs a lot more Quote
kevip6 Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 I've been looking at the same thing recently. For the budget if you collect Tesco clubcard points and have enough to double up and get a Tesco Hudl Tablet for £60 their supposed to be a good bet, but if you have to pay full price then a Sumsung Tab 2 or Nexus 7 seem to be the only choices. I've heard the lower end 7" tabs are a non starter in terms of locking up and running really slowly, but i've not used them myself. Keep us posted on what you choose Quote
Mid life crisis Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 Not sure how this one staks up http://www.wired.co.uk/reviews/tablets/2013-11/hudl Quote
Sparkymart Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Nexus 7 we've got 3 in our family of gadgets highly recommend Quote
kevip6 Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Nexus 7 we've got 3 in our family of gadgets highly recommendMy problem with the Nexus 7 is the lack of a micro sd port and the price. I think the cheapest I've seen it is £180. That said it is a much higher spec than the Sumsung tab2 Edit to add: there are two versions on the Nexus 7 and I'm talking about the 2013 edition Quote
Sparkymart Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 I've got a gadget called a pogoplug which has a 1Tb drive plugged into it and links into my router which gives me a cloud I can access from anywhere I've got wifi or I just link through my phone. My only complaint about it is there isn't a rear camera only a forward facing one. Quote

My only complaint about it is there isn't a rear camera only a forward facing one. The cloud is all very good but the main reason is want extra storage is for films for my boy to watch when on the move and there's no way I want to be streaming those whilst tethered to my phone! I think the 2013 nexus 7 has a rear camera? Quote
Ian Podmore Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 The Tesco unit got a good review on the Gadget show this week, was the best low priced one. I've got a gen 1 Nexus 7 myself - very good unit, great screen. The 2013 one has an ever higher res screen, plus the rear camera as well. You can still get a gen 1, good price at Argos at the moment about £150 I think. Quote
Young Pretender Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Does anyone know if the nexus 7 is a sealed unit or how easy/ necessary it is to replace the battery? One thing that annoys me about my mac and iPhones it the battery and the fact that to replace it from within the sealed unit costs a small fortune. What they don't tell you when you buy a mac is that the battery life expectancy is 3-4 years and it costs approx £125 to replace. Plus we were without it for a week! Quote
IanG1 Posted November 11, 2013 Author Posted November 11, 2013 Picked up a Samsung Tab 3 in the end, reduced from £180 to £140 and then used £20 worth of Argos vouchers we had kicking around. Looks a nice bit of kit but will play more when the little darling is out of the way later, then bundle up and send to santa LOL Quote
the stoat Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 Just got a Hudl for travelling with work as got it for £30 after using club card vouchers. Hugely impressed actually, was not expecting much but performance and screen is great. Quote
