Nick M Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 Windy, I think there may be some packaging issues in a Westfield with the box Dave is running - think Steve (Broughton) mentioned something to me about that but wasn't specific. I don't think there's a gear-lever extension available either so unless the engine is way bay in the chassis it may be a bit of a stretch. Cost was being touted around the 3.5K mark if I recall. Looks a good box though (superior to the Quaife in several ways) but I'm not sure I'd want to do their Westfield specific R&D for them. Quote
windy Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 Nick, Do you recall who makes it? Someone said it was a company in the US I think? Windy Quote
Nick M Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 I *think* it's a company called Elite. It's basically a modified Hewland transaxle internally with a bespoke casing / shift mechanism. Pretty sure it's not American in origin. They were at the Autosport show (the trade bit on the Friday) I believe, if that's in any way relevent or useful. Quote
markboyce Posted August 6, 2003 Author Posted August 6, 2003 ash, thanks for that. Tran-x sell a type 9 dog box. Ratios are: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 2.38:1 1.76:1 1.39:1 1.15:1 1.00:1 Rally and Race 2.07:1 1.53:1 1.21:1 1.00:1 0.87:1 Rally and Race 1.89:1 1.33:1 1.14:1 1.00:1 N/A Rally and Race 2.07:1 1.53:1 1.21:1 1.00:1 N/A Rally and Race Tran-x Dog Box Availability is better than Quaife, around 1 week. Price when I called them was around 2550+vat. I assume there is room for discount in the price, as Quaife would move on the price of there box. cheers mark Quote
windy Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 Does the tranx run 4 dog or 6 dog teeth? Phil Stewart recommends a 4 teeth set up for fast engagement of gears. Windy Quote
markboyce Posted August 6, 2003 Author Posted August 6, 2003 dont know on that windy. I'll give Tran-x a call tomorrow. Anything thing else you want to know about it? cheers mark Quote
markboyce Posted August 6, 2003 Author Posted August 6, 2003 Dont forget however the Quaife Sequential 5-speed is only 300 quid more expensive than the Tran-x box. That must make the decision easier Quote
windy Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 5 speed dog H pattern Quaife - do you have info on ratio's for this for comparison with Tranx? Windy Quote

John Loudon - Sponsorship Liaison Posted August 6, 2003 Posted August 6, 2003 I've got a Tran X 4 speed dog box and am very pleased with it. It has larger main shaft bearing dias and needle roller bearings. The ratios are 2.07, 1.53, 1.21, 1.0 although they do others as well. It weighs 23kg and is near as damn it the same ength as a 5 speed so the prop still fits. You only have to move the mounting place a few inches. The price was very reasonable "nowhere near whats been mentioned above". If you visit the factory in Coventry in person, its amazing how much they will haggle. John Quote
