Insurance renewal

Guys can anyone help with this question please, I have 2 cars, my Westfield and another I use to go to work in, the Westy has 2 years NCD and the other has 9 years NCD, what do I tell the insurance company when it comes to the question of how many years NCD do I have?

I normaly apply on-line but it's all rather confusing. I had a rear end shunt in the Westy this year, it was not my fault so the other insurance company paid in full. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.

I wasnt aware that you could have two ncd running at the same time pete

I have full ncd which i apply to my daily driver

My westfield is insured on a classic policy and therefore ncd does not apply as its assumed that you run another vehicle

Are you not insuring your westy as a classic with a specialist

its far cheaper than standard insurance,i pay £97 pa

As Steve said, I didn't think you could have two NCDs?

A specialist kit insurer is really the best way to go. The club has several as sponsors, who also offer discounts for members. A lot of us are using A Plan now, give them a call and speak to Claire, see what they can do!

Claire has also sorted out the regular tin top insurance for a lot of us as well, I change over to A Plan for this myself earlier in the year, very good value.

As for letting them know, then yes, they need to know, even though not your fault.

Yes you accrue no claims on each policy yet still have to declare if a claim on another policy

 i had 2 for a while but lost one as i didnt use it. it was only a years worth. also when i didnt have my own daily driver i stored my no claims on my westy policy. i have no idea how it worked but they said it made no difference to the policy and would not accrue any more but allowed me to keep them up to date.

it would be good if one of the usual bunch of kit car insureres could work out a policy where you insure your daily but have the westy attached to it. seems a bit daft to have two policies on the go all the time especially if you dont use the westy much anyway. its not like you can be driving them both at the same time!

Great idea but as insurers don't like to see their revenue or profits drop, you can bet your life that the cost of the two-car policy would be within a gnat's of the combined cost of the individual policies.

As mentioned, you can accrue NCD on more than 1 policy for separate cars. Which policy is due for renewal? If it is the road car then tell them 9 years. You will need to declare the accident but make sure they know it was a non fault claim and that it was on a different policy.

As an aside, you can also transfer NCD between policies so have the 9 years NCD on whichever car is most expensive to insure.

So some of you have two lots of ncd ?

I must have a pop at my insurers then as i was told otherwise

My westy ins also told me that ncd doesnt apply to classic insurance policies

I have a van via the company- wifes car ins by her and i was going to trying to apply my 9+ ncd to my westy policy - not so much for the discount, but because you lose it after 2 years

Because they wouldnt let me i have to alternate between me and my wife insuring the tintop

PITA !

My understanding is the ncd applies to a person, not a car. So if you have 3 cars in the family and all insured by you with named drivers you will have one no claims discount.

I'm not sure if you would get two if you had your partner as the insured and you as named driver on on of the cars. You could have one each but woul the premiums stay the same?

NCD is accrued on each policy so if you had 3 cars all insured in your name, regardless of who was named as an additional driver, the NCD would be in your name and you could have 3 lots.

This often happens with young drivers. The kid buys a car and can't afford to insure it. They put the car in a parents name, the parent insures it with the kid as a named driver. The kid drives it and hopefully has a claim free year. At the end of the year, however, has earned no NCD but the parent has. That NCD then can't be transferred to the kid. It is a practice known as fronting and all the insurers are wise to it.
