Hi from a newbie

Hi All, just signed up for membership.I hope you are all well.Ihave a cvh engined westfield i bought in march this year. Unfortunately it is now suffering from low oil pressure. 8psi at tickover and 22 psi at 2000 revs(according to the info i have it should be 40 psi at 2000 revs). I took it to chester sportscars who advised me the engine had limited life left. I my dillemais wether to go for a zetec swap or have my engine rebuilt. I was born without any mechanical skill so i would have to get some one to do this. Chester Sportscars quoted £4640 for a complete coversion with bike carbs with a rebuilt 2 litre zetec, guarateed for 12 months. Is this a fair price or what other options are available. Are there any other companies in the Greater Manchester/North West who do this conversion. Anyy info would be much appreciated from this great club.Sorry for the long first post

Best regards,

PeteBuckle

I believe £4640 is pretty reasonable but would definitely support your decision to shop around. As with many things though, you don't get something for nothing! Be aware of über cheap quotes and go with a firm that knows/understands kit cars ;-) Good luck!

I would be inclined to put another cvh in. The problem could just be a sticky oil relief valve though

Welcome to the club.

Definitely get quotes and shop around. But that includes the original assessment too. Limited life left is a bit of a vague one, though I appreciate they may have given you more info and that's just the "sum up"!

It could be anything from damaged/worn main bearings to just a faulty oil pressure relief valve. Get a second opinion!

There are plenty of good companies in the North West, including specialised engine builders who could just rebuild the existing CVH, if required. And this will be, by far, the most cost effective solution.

As far as engine swaps go, experience  gained by the Boardroom membership over the years tends to show a "ball park" cost of around £2/2500 to swap engines from one type to another. This doesn't include the cost of the new engine! And is based on doing the work yourself. (And yes, there are rare souls that do it for much less, but they're also the ones that tend to be able to scrounge any and all parts at a moments notice, for next to nothing. They also alway seem to have a few old projects rusting away in the garden that can donate bolts and brackets a fps this and that!)

So realistically, that figure doesn't sound way out for having it done commercially. But again, you need second and third opinions.

Given where your based, Id have a word with Fraser or Richard at Blink Motorsport, I'd also have a word with Steve at Middlewich Auto Bodies, (post on here as Steve D)

Ah, the perils of typing a long reply, crossed with Phil!

Most Westfields are relatively simple cars. The one thing we've found over the years, is never assume the worst, no matter how bad the symptoms may look!

You may well need a new engine, it's true. But make sure all the simple things have definitely been ruled out first.

PS, not intended as any sleight against Chester Sportscars, but it's a lot of money to spend on a Westfield, so you need a second opinion or two as a comparison. (It won't I'm afraid add £4k to the value of the car).

Surprised Dave (gadgetman) didn't do the full pitch.  :d

One or more of these can usually be found at the Cheshire monthly meet - 1st Thursday of the month at the Whipping Stocks (A50 just south of Knutsford) 1930 onwards.

Appear, expose your engine bay, and you'll find numerous people able and willing to help suggest a whole range of opinions...

I think I'm getting the hang of this recruiting more members thing... didn't mention how good we all are at encouraging the onset of upgradeitus and helping other people spend their money.  :)
