Working on a saturday as is becoming the norm round here along with 1-2 hours per day I was just wondering how much overtime those of us in employment work. do you get paid for it. How much does your employer take the proverbial?

I spent 10 years doing no less than 16 hour days, many at 18 and some at 20. I also worked for 1 year for 7 days a week at 18 hours a day. Then I cut that down to 5 days at 16-18 hours, Saturdays for 10 hours and Sundays off. Then cut out the Saturdays as well.

I couldn't complain to the boss, he was me.

I haven't been paid for overtime for about a decade now. My part of the business doesn't accrue 'flexi time' either. But I consider myself paid to do the job and sometimes that means staying 4 hours late, starting 3 hours early or having to taken laptop home on the weekend. However on the flip side if there is nothing pressing and it's a nice day I can walk out at 3:30!

If I work longer hours because the job needs it, which is the norm I don't claim. If I work out of hours because the work demands it then I do. ie if the customer demands that the change is done out of hours or I am called in.

Iv'e worked lots of OT over the last 40 years, apparently it's better for employers to cover spikes in workloads rather than take on temp employees.  Time and half has always been the norm with extra for Bank Hols and Sundays.  Do'nt work OT much these days as end up paying 40% tax. I you work for a small business's then OT payments are not the norm.

As M444TTB says, I'm paid to do a job and I'm happy to stay and get a job done.

I claim overtime if more than about 2 hours, but otherwise I just see a sunny day and go home early.

Works a treat for me :)

I work a lot of overtime unpaid, but I am used to it an accept that as a senior manager that sometimes happens.

For the rest of our staff it is time and a half for everything over 40 hours. In truth most staff are happy for the odd half hour here and there but we do allow time of for doctors etc without taking time off them, swings and roundabouts.

However, in these tight times many employers are using the economy as an excuse to get extra work for free. It is up to the individual to decide which is which.
