Wanting to spend 300 quid on a new bike seen the carrera vengeance in halfords looks ok

Will use for road and not too hardcore off road

Any recommendations and alternative

Want front suspension and disc brakes

Thanks

I doubt you'll do better than the carrera for a new bike, but the are deals on the likes of wiggle and CRC for last season bikes at a good discount. Also eBay for used. I got a full suspension cannondale for £350.

Personally if I only had 300 to spend and I wanted new, I wouldn't get suspension, as it forces cost compromise on other components.

If you are willing to consider second hand then look at the GT Aggressor XC2  It's a few years old now but there are some well looked-after examples around.

I bought one for my son at Christmas and was so impressed that I've purchased a couple more since, one each for SWMBO and me.  Great spec, really nice components, including hydraulic disc brakes, an excellent frame and the forks are easily upgradeable, if required, but I've not had the need. Looks great as well. Really good off-road although we're mainly using them for commuting to work, when the weather's half-decent, so I got hold of some spare wheels and fitted Schwalbe road tyres. They fly!

Bought all three off Ebay for between £220 and £250 each, which I think is extremely good value. Leaves you change for some ancillaries! :t-up:

The Voodoo Bantu (Halfords) is also an awful lot of bike for the money and well received, but it's £100 more than you want to spend. Again, second hand, I've seen examples coming in at just under £300.00

Would you be better off with a hybrid for that sort of usage?  Carrera Crossfire 2 is same money

After speaking to my mate who knows a few things about bikes I've bought a brand new jamis mountAin bike for 350 only used for 10 miles the quality between this is visible from 6 feet away against a carrera

Use to ride lots of road bike a few years ago and have also just decided to get back into bikes and get some fitness back.

Bought a Carreras vengeance at Xmas as it seemed good value.

Have now done 300 miles on it and no problems at all, good range of kit on it for money only bad side was the saddle is not very good but £20 sorted it out. Another good investment is a set of spd shoes and pedals as it makes a vast difference and also keeps your legs straight while your legs get use to it.

Any more questions just let me know

That's what I did, bought a 'last season' bike from Winstanleys. :). Very happy, much more bike for the money!!

Can I be there first time you fall over trying to release?

My 1st was at a bus stop, an old dear peed herself laughing " are you alright son?" "I'm fine thanks" pretending I did this all the time.

My 2nd was an unmanned train station next to a cycle track, got up ,made sure no one had seen me then realised the camera was tracking me.Im sure at British Rail Christmas parties they pull out that video.
