Captain Colonial Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 An irregular thread of things learned in the past 7 days that I, and hopefully you, will contribute to - but with the following rules: 1) Only one post per 7 days maximum containing things you've only just learned during that time (although it's OK to comment on, but not criticise, what others have learned) 2) You must have learned it this past week - what you learned before that is old news and penalty points will be applied (somehow) 3) They can be related to anything at all, as long as it's news to you 4) Maximum of ten things only per week, but no minimum - just one thing learned is fine OK, so here we go - what I have learned this week: > I went three days without shaving simply because I was lazy. (I remember when as a teenager, I couldn't wait to start shaving - now it's a PITA that will take up nearly half a year of my life.) Went to shave this morning and saw someone in the mirror with brown hair and a frighteningly silver beard. Lesson: No beards for me. > Not everything advertised on TV is rubbish. Bought one of these at my local Asda to stop the flies coming in the back door and let some breeze in to the house - it works very well indeed (apart from adding a few fixing screws at the top inside corners so the cack-handed bulldozing idjits in the house didn't pull the Velcro away) - clever, convenient and most impressed. > Giving mechanical advice to people in earshot of others almost always results in someone else piping up and saying your advice is wrong. I've reached the conclusion that it's a miracle I've survived to my advanced age and having worked on things since I was 13 years old without killing myself while doing DIY, based on the number of people who tell me I'm doing or have done it wrong. Reminds me of the "Only me!" character from the old Harry Enfield show - "You don't want to do that, you want to do it like this!" (Sample for those of you who have never seen it.) http://youtu.be/Y4QZsjuCKjg Lesson: Stop giving advice and sharing your knowledge and experience in public as it only winds me up when people inevitably correct me. > F1 tyres had steel belts. I would have thought in a hi-tech sport like F1, Pirelli would have used Kevlar belts - hell, even some road tyres use Kevlar belts. They've changed them to Kevlar now, but it surprised me that it was that low-tech. > Having a tooth capped costs £214 and takes three visits over a month to do. I found this out when my tooth fractured at 35,000 feet on a flight out to Spain, necessitating staying doped and drunk all holiday (to be fair, I had already planned the latter part of that). That's it for me until next week - what have you learned? Quote
Norman Verona Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 I have learnt that our MemSec is morphing into Ceriolli in his absence. I have learnt how to stick floor tiles down. Only taken two years to finish the job. Quote
