Rhett Turner - Black Country AO Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 hope you enjoy the drive there, take tools, spares and as many spare bits as you can carry. If you have prepared well it should not be a problem. Good luck anyway. Quote
housebuilder Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 Eventful day at the test when a fuel hose decided to blow off discharging copious amounts of petrol on the floor. Luckily no fire! Inspector was very helpful and a nice bloke. Failed on emissions. Car sounds like a bag of spanners so will try to resend the calibration Omex sent me and see if it's any better. Other things to watch for those of you preparing for a test; One of the rose joints on the back was slightly out of square. He didn't like it pushing at an angle on the washer. I had seen some cars with their front flexible brake pipes cable tied to the wishbones. He didn't like this and said they had to be pipe clipped- although he did say that it may not be necessary to clip at all. On the passenger side inside the car the bodywork was slightly out of line where the scuttle meets the side panel meaning there was a sharp overhang which will need to be fettled or covered with a strip. I forgot to take the letter from Westfield regarding the speedo calibration (duh) My steering lock doesn't work. Never even thought to check it. Not sure what's wrong with that. One of the loops for the harnesses was not screwed all the way in. Despite being well over an inch threaded in and jammed rigid he didn't like that either. It was only a couple of threads showing so will have to investigate. Hope its not cross threaded. Not a bad list really but once it bombed on the emissions there was little point trying to fix it there. The examiner seemed as disappointed as I was with the emissions test! Hope that helps anyone coming up to their test. Quote
Dommo Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Not a bad list - retest should be nice and quick. Good to know I'm not the only one who dumped fluids over the floor at the test. Besides, passing first time is overrated Quote
Rhett Turner - Black Country AO Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Sorry to hear about the failure. I'm sure most of the issues will be straightforward to rectify. I know mine sounded and ran really badly initially, living so close to the factory I had them give it a pre-iva check and I'm sure they set the engine up correctly, I think the engine management map may be correct but I think there are some adjustments that need to be made on the injection unit, It was similar with the throttle bodies, applied the new map got them running but at low revs it was awful, had them fine tuned back at the factory, again it was not the map but the TBs that needed to be adjusted. I'm not sure how I would have sorted that my self. I know with my harnesses they were really really tight, I ended up getting a tap and using that to clear the hole, I think it is because the thread gets partly blocked when the chassis is coated. I had to screw it in then out bit at a time until the thread was clear. The bolts still took some getting in though. Re the brake lines, I clipped my to the wishbone, I did cover the brake lines with conduit though, I did this because I could not get the pipes to route naturally away from the body work and having them rub the body work would be worse as that would cause the line to ware. Good luck with the rectification and re-test. Quote
pickmaster Andy Lowe Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Sounds like you have everything under control for next time Good look Quote
housebuilder Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 Mr Turner you are a fountain of knowledge. For the record I would not have even made it to the test without your blog so many thanks Not that upset really. The list was quite small. I fear the set up is going to be a pain in the proverbial though And thanks for the good luck pickmaster Quote
Andy Rob Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Sorry to hear mate - you will get there! I didn't make it first time either, but once completed at least you know you have a well built, safe and sorted car! Quote
darve Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 why do you need a letter from Westfield re the Speedo? I thought the speedo was tested on rollers Quote
