Mercedes Benz W196. How much?

Whilst we're on about auctions, Bonhams will be auctioning a Mercedes Benz W196 as driven by Fangio to win the world championship in 1954.

If I can remember this correctly, there were 14 of these cars made, 1 has been written off and MB own 9. So only 4 are in "public" hands.

It is a very significant car which would have won more GPs if MB hadn't withdrawn from racing following the Le Mans tragedy. Technically it was way beyond anything else at the time.

I suspect this car will break all records and could go for more than £20 million, Actually I wouldn't be surprised to see it fetch £35 Million ($50 million dollars).

It is highly unlikely another will come on the open market in the next 20 years, if ever.

Auction is at the Festival of Speed on the Friday.

I am surprised that if Mercedes donated it originally to Beaulieu that they were allowed to then sell it ..

I think it left Beaulieu some time ago.Bonhams are refusing to say where it comes from and who owns it.

Yes I didn't imply it is beaulieu selling now but it's puzzling how it could leave them and end up in private hands rather than going back to MB
