Norman Verona Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Or, shall I fill up at Calais? I'll have a look today what it is here today. However as it's about 8 cents less than petrol I'm assuming it's cheaper here than in the UK. Many thanks Quote
Rhett Turner - Black Country AO Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Using the Eurotunnel terminal as a start point and a 10 miles radius diesel varies between 139.9 & 147.9 per litre. Quote
Young Pretender Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Was going to say Kent is probably averaging approx £1.40 from what i see Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 Thanks. I'll have enough to get from here to Sheffield on one tank so can fill up anywhere en-route. Normal route is to M25 than A1, M18. However would turn off to find a supermarket if required. HM's gone out to get a new expansion drian valve for the gite boiler and will be looking at the price at Super U. Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 OK, HM has come back and reports the price is 1.31€ per litre. At todays rate (1.1844) that make the fuel here £1.11 per litre. I'll fill up just outside Calais. Thanks. Quote
Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Cheapest up north is £1:35, Interesting that the EU is looking into Price Fixing right now !! Quote
Paul Hurdsfield - Joint Manchester AO Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Yup the further north you get the cheaper it is, til' you get to Scotland then it goes up again All the supermarkets round here are £134.9 ish Quote
iain m Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Drove past a Jet Station in Worthing yesterday, both petrol and Derv were £1.33.9 I checked this was correct again on the way back. Quote
Norman Verona Posted May 16, 2013 Author Posted May 16, 2013 I used to run 9 petrol stations, apart from 2 dealerships, 4 other workshops and a commercial vehicle body building department. The fuel companies were always within a .005 of each other. This was 30 years ago so if you believe that was a coincidence then look outside the window and you'll see the pigs flying past. Of course the other part of the equation is tax. How would you feel working hard and selling your product to see the government treble the price with tax. You may be tempted to put your prices up as it wouldn't show that much at the pumps. Quote
Wile E. Coyote Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 If you fill up with Shell, beware. The local station to us (the one near Oulton) shows a price for "regular" diesel, but a number of the pumps only have Optimax Diesel on the rack... at, IIRC 10p+ premium. Been caught out once, when I just picked up the only black nozzle, and only noticed when the pump ran significantly past the amount I usually end up putting in. Quote
s2rrr Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Wile E, I had a similar experience with that very garage and even complained when inside as they had clearly ripped me off with some adventurous advertising. I even spoke with the garage owner by phone from the counter and gave her a real ear bashing. So I guess that worked, not and they continue to rip people off by advertising cheaper diesel and then not having labels on the pumps to clearly show which pump is the cheap one. Absolute barstewards, need boycotting. They are franchises by the way as Shell no longer produces fuel in the UK, we make it at Essars refinery ex Shell at Stanlow and they fanny about with the prices. Back on thread very rarely bought "Shell " diesel even though I worked for them for 30 years. Do use their Optimax is it, petrol in the Westy though. Cheapest diesel locally 134.9p at the Asda garage in Sale. Generally within a couple of pence. Dearest is on the A5117 about 1/4 mile from the refinery at really stupid prices 145+ can't possibly sell much. Bob Quote
Wile E. Coyote Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 I've not bought diesel from them since... but you're right, the Westie does seem to like a drop of Optimax... Quote
