Majors were a proper man's machine. the seat was 6ft high, the crank handle starter shaft was 3ft 6in off the ground and if you were less than 6 ft tall and 15 stone plus you had no chance of starting it, after a days ploughing you could fry an egg on the top of the gearbox/axle casing, no summer shorts and plastic trainers for these blokes.

The back box was called the "transport box" it was briliant, remember there were no girly 25 kilo bags, all corn came in 2 CWT  hessian sacks Yes 224 imperial pounds. At 10 I could roll a full sack onto the box and be up and away without help.,

If you are worried this has turned into a non sports car thread your tractor motor was also used in Triumph early TRs and the Standard Vanguard saloon and estate.

Cheers Iain!!!  Good knowledge....

Ah  -  Standard Vanguard!!  Now there's a good looking car......  Wet liners and I think they had to come out of the bottom.  Had one with a 3 speed column change; if I remember correctly you flicked the end of the column towards you in top to select overdrive.

It's a war vintage cat D2.

It has a petrol starting engine (twin boxer next to bulkhead) which engages the main diesel through a clutch and gear. It then cranks the main engine and circulates the exhaust and coolant around it until it is warm. Then you open the throttle........sounds so easy

She is 360 hp but boosts to 400 when needed.

My other one is even bigger but she's no good for spring work as she is so heavy nearly 25 ton, she's a Cat865 which is 540hp (boosts to 580hp) haven't actually got photos of her from the outside.
