AidanPlace Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Loves: It's blisteringly fast, water cooled, great for games and media, 5.1 amplified sound through Kef speakers, with loads of storage free and photoshop runs like a charm. Hates: It's got a whine/vibration which I can't track down and it's annoying the tits off me. Quote

DerekJ Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Hi Norn, I spend most of my working days with Visual FoxPro RDBMS. The worst thing about computers are the people who missuse them. Or users that don't understand what they are doing and just keep pressing random buttons and shouting that the system does not work. The best thing is OBVIOUSLY this forum! I come from a Pick background (that's a relational database o/s for those that have never heard of it) Quote
Norman Verona Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 Derek, not come across FoxPro. Pick had a cult following. The author was beach bum called Dick Pick (I kid you not). He was asked to develop an inquiry system that could be used by GI's in a far off place called Vietnam. This was in the late 60s. I got into it in the early 80s when I was looking for a platform to develop my idea for a dealer system. It met and exceeeded my wildest dreams and a year later we launched the first so called DMS. The system did everything a dealer needed including all the customer facing stuff. Up to that point systems only did the number crunching like the accounts and stock control. Only a few could actually raise a parts invoice, having the hand written invoice transferred to the system by backroom staff. At that time there was a consultant who advised the motor manufacturers and trade on computers and started to call these system Dealer Management System after the name of my first company Motor Dealer Management Systems, which was abbreviated to MoDeMS. The company did very well and was sold to ADP in 1992. We formed the new (current) company in 1996. This is called Dealer Management Systems (DMS). OK, if you're still awake I'll leave it there. alexander72 Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 best thing on my computer is the picture of Debbie and the kids.... worst thing is the internet banking link that tells me how hard ive worked to pay the HMRC this month :-) Quote
Ian Podmore Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 Have got Apples 1st tablet computer, with an additional memory module..... The card is physically massive but has only got 1MB of memory. Base memory is only 4MB. Still a lot more than my 1st that only had 32k. What I hate about computers - as quickly as the hardware improves the software slows it down again. Quote
Norman Verona Posted March 27, 2013 Author Posted March 27, 2013 Ian, that's what I call the unholy alliance between Intel and the software houses. It creates huge wealth for everyone as we go on the merry-go-round of new machines then new software, then new machine..... James, a man who taught me more about business than any other always said I should be pleased to pay tax as it meant I was working and earning. He also said that I should be pleased to pay insurance premiums and never claim. He was an Austrian who came to the UK as a teenager to escape the Nazi persecution. He died a few years ago, one of life's real gentleman. Quote
Ian Podmore Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I did manage to jump out of the loop with an old laptop that wouldn't run XP sensibly by putting Ubuntu on it. Good way of breathing life into a computer that would otherwise be condemned. All for free as well. Quote

Hi Norm, I've spent the last ten years growing a full ERP solution for our company. Does everything that products like SAP do but (IMHO) better as it's designed for exactly what we do. It's a never ending project as there are always upgrades tweeks and "Can we do this?" requests. Cheers Derek Quote
Norman Verona Posted March 28, 2013 Author Posted March 28, 2013 Derek, when I started my development we were trading as a dealership but I developed the system for general use as I planned to form a company and sell it to other dealers. It took me a year of working 18 hours a day, 7 days a week. When we did the first install 2 of us spent about 3 months on site debugging and improving the system. The client never realised he was the first user. All good fun but 30 years ago now. Quote
