i'm wanting to setup some parental control filtering on my pc to stop my 6 year old going on certain sites (caterham :))

i can set up a password but as he uses the pc for homework its not that pratical. i would just like to create him a user account and limit him to only been able to access approved sites and deny links away from that site without approval

Some routers let you do this (worth a quick look in your settings to see if yours does?).

Alternatively MS has "parental controls" in Windows Vista (suspect it's still there in later guises?), or there's third party software - good list here: http://lifehacker.com/5312820/five-best-content-filtering-tools

Google for K9 Parental Controls ... free, and it blocks dodgy sites. Worth a look to see if it will do what you want :)

We use it on all our home PCs, to block access for our 8 and 6 yr old

What system are you using PC ? If so its easy, set him up a account and set up the controls. Easy to do, I had to do it last week after our 13 yr old was caught watching Porn, and no it was not ours

Our main challenge is not so much what he watches but the time he spends on it, mostly playing internet games. Have set up time controls, which work reasonably well...except he then asks his mother to borrow her laptop/iPad etc which defeats the object! He built his own PC last night in a few hours so am now thinking how to maintain control. I could just disconnect the wireless router but I tend to need it late at night ie the time when I do my catching up with online newspapers. In addition thinking forward when designing the new house am planning to install a hone network so need to see how that can be managed

Switch the router off, that seems to work, then wait for WWIII to kick off.

When the children were younger I used a web filtering product used to cost £20 pre year for a few computers. Surfpatrol or CbrePatrol of something like that. it was the home version of the corporate app that was in use.

You could set the level of access to different categories of sites (violent, sex, etc) set time limits per day/week/etc on internet activity, set boundaries so that access would not be allowed too late or too early.

It worked well and as they got older I eased the restriction back until the point I no longer thought it needed restriction at all.
