kennedyj Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 I noticed that the 2002 Speed Series Regs section 3.2 state..."Rollcages must be fitted, but they must not be able to accept suspension loads." Does this mean that my standard Westfield rollbar is not compliant? JohnK Quote
Blatman Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 If you are running in the road going classes, the standard Westfield roll bar should pass scrutineering, but I personally wouldn't feel happy without a proper RAC bar. I'm fairly sure the rule was the same last year, so it could just be a poor choice of words by whoever wrote the regs Quote
Fast Westie Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 so it could just be a poor choice of words by whoever wrote the regs Blatman, that wouldn't be the first time Apparantly, no Westfield rollbar fully meets MSA regs since these call for the hoop to be monted in front of the rear suspension mounts or so the scrutineer told me. He let me through though Quote

Was that at a reace meeting? Is it different for road going classes at sprints and hillclimbs? Where's me blue book............... Quote
Fast Westie Posted January 8, 2002 Posted January 8, 2002 Blatman It was at a race meeting for a no road going class car. Quote
kennedyj Posted January 10, 2002 Posted January 10, 2002 Thanks for the comments. I also feel that a proper RAC rollbar would be best but I only intend to enter a couple of events (for novelty value since I have never seen a Pinto powered car sprinted . I have also fitted a boot-box lid (to keep my sandwiches dry) and the struts for a RAC bar would present something of a problem. I need to think about this.... -JohnK Quote
Blatman Posted January 10, 2002 Posted January 10, 2002 Never seen a pinto sprinted? Steve and Jamie Robinson sprint a very tidy pinto powered car to some impressive results, Jamie regularly worrying the top 3 runners at a few events. The RAC roll bar rear supports would be a problem, but not as big a problem as an unsupported rollbar which collapses (frighteningly easily)................I personally would not want to venture out onto any sort of circuit without the RAC bar. Keith Scarfe Posted January 10, 2002 Posted January 10, 2002 Never seen a pinto sprinted? There was also a famous pinto powered race car driven by Bill Tulley in the factory race series up until the demise of class B. He/it was very quick, me and him had some good close races. Our engines were very different. His only revved to 5k but gave huge low down torque, mine 8k and high up power. As Blatman said the std roll bar is useless. It is cosmetic only and just folds if the car is inverted. I strongly recommend you consider a proper RAC one and chop your boot box. You can still fit the boot box with some modification. If you want some proof and are prepared to be scared have a look at the following: http://pub.se7ens.net/picture....-01.jpg http://pub.se7ens.net/picture....-02.jpg http://pub.se7ens.net/picture....-03.jpg http://pub.se7ens.net/picture....-04.jpg p.s. Gordon lived but was quite badly hurt. Quote
Peter Cox Posted January 10, 2002 Posted January 10, 2002 Makes you wonder whether RAC rollbars should be standard fitment Quote
westy Posted January 10, 2002 Posted January 10, 2002 After seeing the pictures I better get a RAC bar sorted. Whats the cost & procedures for fitting one? Thanks, Westy Quote
N_J Posted January 10, 2002 Posted January 10, 2002 Westy.. cost is about £120 (I think) and fitting is about 1/2 days work, (depends on how tidy you want to be and how quick your spaner and Drimmel are). The easiest fitting is using the detachable rear stays as you can keep the boot reativley intact (room for sarnies, beer, tent, sleeping bag etc etc). Using the 'all in one ' ususally means either loosing the boot or fabricating an alternative. The holes for the bar are usually drilled in the upper suspension mounting already. Quote
ian crocker Posted January 12, 2002 Posted January 12, 2002 In roadgoing classes the Blue Book has no relevance under most regional rules. I have seen plenty of open cars with no roll protection at all. Obviously a roll with the std bar could have serious consequences but how many have you seen at sprint events ? I do use an FIA bar myself before anybody asks but for the odd sprint I think it is probably unnecessary. BTW, some people's avatars are huge. Peter Cox's is 400K and seems to carry on dowloading forever in the background as the browser does the resizing. Ian Quote
Peter Cox Posted January 12, 2002 Posted January 12, 2002 Ok, ok, calm down. I'm only trying to take over known world bandwidth. I'll see how I can reduce the size. BTW, unless I've got some strange cache settings, the boardroom seems to download ever so quick on my 56k modem. Quote
ian crocker Posted January 13, 2002 Posted January 13, 2002 Your avatar will be cached, but the first time somebody needs it they will have to download nearly 1/2MB! Cheers, Ian Quote
