robo1968 Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Anyone used this stuff? http://bit.ly/Z1mEVc I'm a bit sceptical of its claims. Any good or is it a bit of a scam? Quote
stephenh Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Its a joke! improving engine wear by 97% But that is 97% of what? Maybe 97% of the waer rate with no oil in the engine at all? Mrs H's cooking oil would probably get close to that! Top quality engine oil is not cheap and it is developed by companies with a great deal of expertise. Do you think they leave something out? If so why? It just doesn't make sense. Just invest ibn a good quality oil suitable for your engine and for the type of use you put your car to. Actually, if it is as good as they try to imply, then there ought to be a warning on the can about the effect this is likely to have on your gearbox. The very best (from a pure lubricating point of view) oils will tend to wreak a synchromesh gearbox in a high performance car. The synchromesh relies on friction to equalise the speed of the 3 shafts in a conventional gearbox to allow the 'box to engage the next gear. Without that friction you can't change gear quickly without wreaking the synchro quite quickly. So their claims are either a "con" or they don't know what they are talking about! Quote
jeff oakley Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 I would not use it but there is some science behind products like this. Slick 50 was such a product and lucas oils do one. They all use super slippery chemicals which fill the microscopic surface of the metal and reduce friction. However, as Stephen says, good quality oil is all you need in any engine to do the job well. If you use very cheap none descript oil some of the additives will not be in that top quality oils have, if that is the case sometimes these products can help but buy the right stuff and there is no need. Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Snake Oil As Stephen and Jeff have said buy the right oil to begin with. Shell & Mobil etc spend millions developing them. Millers currently have a nano tech oil which does all of this, not cheap, but as with all things, those who buy on price alone must expect a little less on the quality front. Quote
Captain Colonial Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 What oil do snakes use? And what viscosity? Snakes have to be able to move in a wide variety of temperatures. Quote

I use Millers oil in mine, its not cheap but you only get what you pay for. Quote
