  1. Hi, what would be the correct shocks to use for escort live axle for a ‘96 SE? Westfield parts have a set for near £500 so looking to see if I could source a suitable set up a bit cheaper (but not for pennies, I know a decent outlay will be needed!). cheers James
  2. Through the years Westfield's have used a number of different types and designs for their rear axle and suspension. whilst there are some variations with different applications and years, for Car engined vehicles these can be most typically be categorised into 4 different types. Escort Live axle The Live axle was used in the Pre-Lit, Narrow Body (SE) and Wide Body (SEW) cars. It uses a modified Ford Escort Mk1 or Mk2 (English) axle. Independent Axle (Westfield/Escort Diff) This was first used in the Narrow Body (SEI) and the early Wide Body (SEIW) cars. The differential unit is from a Ford English Axle and is housed within a cast aluminium housing off Westfield's own design. The casting is embossed with the Westfield logo on the rear. Independent Axle (Sierra Diff) Predominantly found in Wide Body (SEIW) cars and Sierra SDV's. As well as the Ford Sierra's differential The Sierra SDV also uses the driveshafts and rear hubs from the donor with Westfield uprights designed specifically for them. The Standard Modular build kits use Westfield's own suspension uprights and driveshafts. Sierra SDV rear upright shown below Independent Axle (Mazda SDV) The Mazda diff is only found on the Mazda SDV which was released around 2006, the differential unit, driveshafts and rear uprights are taken from the Mk1 to M2.5 MX5. Other Axles Sprite/Midget and British Leyland Marina axles have also both featured on early Pre-Lit cars together with the Escort Live axle. Land Rover Freelander differentials can be found used in the current Bike Engined (Mega) chassis. The Sport Turbo uses the differential unit from the Mk3 Mazda MX5.
  3. Ford Sierra 3.92 open 7 inch diff. Freshly painted and ready to install. Only removed to upgrade to lsd. Collection preferred due to weight however happy to discuss courier options. Looking for £150 ono.
  4. 2 or 3 years ago I was having mega problems with my 1989 SEi twisting and breaking driveshafts, after spending £££ on replacement shafts/joints/ strengthened tubes and new stubbs etc being custom built and still breaking joints or shearing stubbs I gave up and decided to convert to a Sierra diff. I bought a later SEiW to tie me over while I carried out the conversion. 3 or 4 years later I have had a diff mountings fabricated and am now in a position to build driveshafts and a propshaft. So first of all I need either a Sierra propshaft or least a flange/Yoke to mate with the diff and I can probably use my old propshaft and have the new flange/yoke. So if anyone has any of these items kicking around please shout up and let me know what you would take for them, also if anyone has any suggestions as to the best way to go with the propshaft. Secondly I am not sure of the best way forward with driveshafts, I seem to have several options. The first and probably the best but more expensive way is to source 2 Sierra uprights and wheel flanges and use bolt on joints. The diff already has flanges for the bolt on type. The second option would be to use the earlier Sierra slide in joint at the hub utilising a Sierra flange and my own uprights or some I purchased on the forum a few years back and using the bolt on joint on the inner. I would then have to have the bars turned down at one end and splined to fit the outer joint at the upright. Thoughts, ideas and opinions would be welcomed and if anyone has any parts/components available that might help make the job easier please shout up. Looking forward to your help and input. Mike.

    I broke it, again.

After 6 days, I’ve broken it again. The offside drive shaft sheared, and took out the wheel carrier. Anyone know where I can get replacements?

    Diff breather catch-tank

More items in the garage clearout.... Also a very simple but effective differential breather bottle; Seems a shame to junk it... £5 + postage. A lightweight windscreen washer bottle. I made this to save carrying a kilo of washer fluid around and taking up a decent size space under the bonnet. Passed the MoT every time, it just means that you carry less than a coke-can amount of washer fluid with you...Perfect! (how often do you manage to drain a washer bottle in a Westfield?!). It's got the T shaped connector with a couple of inches of wiring tail, and also a black washer spray nozzle...SOLD And a Ford Sierra handbrake....SOLD (I've also got a handbrake cable if you really need it - not the best condition but may be useful to someone?)

    Diff Identification

Hi Folks, I am looking to upgrade my differential to a LSD. Here is the housing... and here is the tag. From what I have gathered so far, this differential is a 3.91:1 open diff from a ford scorpio (I could be wrong!). Could I please have some advise on the best upgrade method for this as I still feel that I have a lot to learn on this subject and I'm sure many of you have a lot more experience than I do! The reasons for wanting to upgrade to LSD are: 1) I have a ST170 Zetec engine sat in the garage which will be a nice swap for the 1.8 silvertop that is in the car at the moment. I'm thinking throttle-bodies... 2) I would quite like to do some track days in the future. Cheers, Simon

    XTR2 diff alignment

Hi Guys So the XTR is now Taxed & MOT'd, I have a couple of little teething problems but noting too bad, the only one I'm unsure of is the alignment of the rear diff/sprocket. It all looks to be inline but as you turn the wheels the chain gets tighter and then loosens off, like its egg shaped, is this something anyone's come across. I've just read that maybe I should of loosened the grub screws in the bearing carrier, although I'm not sure how this would make a difference. Any help would be appreciated Chris

    Rebuilt Sierra 7" LSD

Sierra 7" LSD 3:62 This is the diff out of my Megablade, it has done about 900 miles since it was fully reconditioned by the guys at Road & Race Tranmissions in Kent with all new bearings and left as good as new. Only reason for sale is it is no use for my new engine £400

    MX5 3.9 LSD

Hi all, I'm back home in Ireland for Christmas and stumbled across someone selling two mx5 diffs from 6 speed cars. I've bought the 3.6 for myself but he's got a 3.9 there too. I know these are pretty hard to come by so if anyone is looking for one, I can pick it up and take it back across on the ferry when I'm going back to work. I paid 400 euro for the 3.6 with prop shaft and drive shafts. I'd imagine the cost for the 3.9 will be pretty similar. As I said I can take it back across to Birmingham for anyone interested. Cheers, Andrew

    Mazda Limited Slip Diff LSD

Does anyone know if a torsen LSD will fit in the 1.6 casing, possibly using my existing crown wheel?
  12. Due to a change of plans I'm putting this up for sale It's a rare 3.6 ratio type-2 Torsen Torque biasing diff. Please ignore the fact it has 3.9 written on the carrier, i've counted to teeth on the crown wheel and pinion and it's definitely 3.6 Most MX5's came with either a 4.3 or 4.1 ratio diff, the 3.6 was only found on the 6-speed cars. Comparing with a 4.3 ratio this will give you an engine speed of approx 3100rpm in 5th gear at 70mph rather than 3600rpm. First gear will also be longer increasing from approx 30mph to 37mph @ 6200rpm. 60mph in second gear would now be possible. Further reading here http://www.miata.net/garage/diffguide/ http://www.torsen.com/products/products.htm http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/gearing.php Visually the diff is in very good condition, I have removed the carrier to inspect the gear surfaces and there is no evidence of chips or damage. The diff has been reassembled, but is currently not filled with oil. For those that have the smaller diff fitted to the 1.6 cars (identifiable by having no torque damper on the diff nose and bolt on driveshafts) I also have spare a pair of push in driveshafts and a shortened prop of the correct length for a Westfield which I would sell with the diff. I'm offering this for sale at £300 for the diff only or £400 with the shafts and prop which is a lot less than I paid for it. I'm afraid it's too heavy for me to post, but I'm happy to wrap it for you to send your own courier or else collection in person from Colchester CO6 Thanks Mark wsccessex@btinternet.com
