I’ve been chasing an oil leak that I’d finally whittled down to either the rear main seal (RMS) or the gearbox input shaft seal.
I decided to tackle the fix in my own garage for the first time. To make it work, I bought a new low-profile engine hoist that allowed me to drive the car over the legs; this meant I could push the car in and out of the garage to create the space I needed.
I managed to get the engine out and back in within a day. Admittedly, the dry sump makes the job slightly more complex, but I bought some AN12 and AN10 caps so I could seal the pipework and pull the tank out while it was still full of oil.
Once I pulled the flywheel to check the RMS, it actually looked perfectly dry. The front end of the gearbox, however, didn’t look quite so good!
