WESTFIELD SEIGHT 4.6 JOHN EALES ENG. REDUCED PRICE.

Thank you. That’s the first time I’ve heard of that being done. Every day’s a school day.

    A wrap idea

If you do JPS, be aware that you will have an overwhelming desire to either get your existing wheels refinished to gold or get new gold wheels, so factor that cost into things.

    A wrap idea

My bonnet has a lot of grills/ducts, so not much room for a logo there. Maybe a stripe or two, but that’s about it.

    A wrap idea

The dark green gelcoat on my 1993 SEiGHT is beginning to show its age, with a few areas of crazing, scratches, etc. I’m loathed to paint the car, but getting a good colour match with gelcoat repairs I suspect will be next to impossible. So the obvious other option is a wrap. (Which can be taken off in the future if required, with very little chance of any damage to the existing gelcoat.) I could go dark green, and keep it looking original. But that seems a little bit of a waste of the opportunity. I’d like to do something more fun. I’ve been thinking of race liveries. There’s a lovely Gulf car locally, but I’d feel a fraud copying that. Can’t do Martini as I’m not so keen on the main body of the car being white. And liveries that split the car in two horizontally, such as Gold Leaf or Rothmans do not suit my car which has the butterfly wings. Hence at the top of the idea leader board currently is JPS. Wrap the car in gloss black, then add the gold coachlines, wording, logo’s etc. Given the age of my car, and the wings, I’d rather go with more period/classic look, than something too modern. Has anyone got any other ideas? Would love to hear other suggestions or see pictures.

No problem. Firstly I have to say that I wasn’t the builder but I do have all the paperwork. Before IVA, the builder registered the fully rebuilt engine (according to Rimmer Bros from a 1976 Rover Vitesse) with the necessary authority and it was certified as part of the kit (pre-registered). The car was subsequently completed in 2009 from all new parts (no donor car) and upon IVA, registered as a 2009 car with age related plate. Emissions are listed on the V5 as ‘visual check only’.

@harrypotter I would refer you to my FAQ MOT emissions thread. This covers V5c notes Q plates and registration dates. https://forum.wscc.co.uk/forum/topic/140737-what-are-the-mot-emissions-for-a-westfieldkit-car/?do=getNewComment

So how can you tell what the situation is with any particular kit car once it’s registered?

Proven date, yes. But supplying the acceptable proof to the DVSA in advance of the IVA can be the tricky part. Many car manufacturers in the past had departments you could contact, with the engine number, and (usually for a fee) they would supply a letter with the info from their records on when that engine was made. I don’t know if it’s still the case, but Burtons used to include a “cheat sheet” in their catalogue, of how to decode engine manufacturing dates from Ford engine numbers, again, this used to be admissible. One thing you do have to be careful of in these discussions, is that people conflate IVA emissions requirements and MoT emissions requirements, when they’re subtly different. But once IVA has set the limit on the car as tested, that’s what you’re working with going forward. (Which is obviously also why Q’s are so beneficial, compared to year reg’s.) if, at IVA, if you cannot prove the engines age in an acceptable way, then it will be tested to current standards, which will then, (unless the car’s on a Q), set the emissions test for the car, going forward.

Hi Martyn. so is it always the date of the engine that determines emissions on a kit car?

Sorry to keep asking, but what do you mean by ‘pre’ registration? is the car on an 2009 plate? What is the proven age of the engine? All info helps to get an accurate picture of what is required for Mot purposes. Thanks.

I still want a Westfield V8, nothing else, but am still looking. I sold mine last year and regret it. The emissions issue I thought I understood but it's become confusing. Please pm if you can clarify why a V8 post-2001 car can escape MOT emission tests, first registered 2003 with a new engine

@joolz you are referring to engine changes on production cars already registered, not new build, non registered, kit cars! The answer is in my emissions flow chart in the FAQ general info. This also based on chart 2 of the gaseous emissions section of the manual. If you look at either of these flow charts you will see a pre 1st Aug 1995 date that leads to a non cat test. This is what DVSA have used at IVA to assign the emissions standard to the engine fitted to a 'new' kit car. I believe that Westfield Sportscars were supplied with new V8 engines manufactured before the 1995 date to fit to the factory built Seights for many years into this century. This has been investigated by Phil @RickRack for his car.

  23. You see this is what I don't understand .. this is the rules as far as I can work out If the engine is older than the vehicle Vehicle first used before Sept 1, 2002: The car is tested to the emissions standards that apply to the age of the engine. You must have proof of the engine's age to present to the testing station. Example: A 1995 car fitted with a 1991 engine will be tested to 1991 emissions standards. If the engine is newer than the vehicle Vehicle first used on or after Sept 1, 2002: The car will be tested to the emissions standards of the vehicle's age, not the engine's. So how do they get away with no cat test? If it's a 2009 car you need a cat test ? I'm obviously missing something :shout: Martyn Vann can you shed any light on it ?

    Devon & Somerset run out - 25th October 2025

A bit of a last minute one this, but I had a free morning and suggested a run down across Dartmoor, but had to be back in Crewkerne by around 12.30pm. The weather looked a little dodgy too, so in the end we opted for a meet in Cullompton Services with four cars making the trip, myself, Adrian, Colin and Gareth & Linda - that is, once I drove from the wrong service station to the correct one . Deciding to stay further East to stay in the better weather, we drove over the Blackdown Hills in the general direction of Chard, then wound our way down to Charmouth. Soon after Charmouth we lost Adrian to a worsening Throttle Position Sensor problem, and he had to limp home with a popping and banging car which has now fortunately been fixed. After Charmouth, we headed roughly along the coast via West Bay to the viewing point overlooking Chesil Beach and Portland, somewhere I often find myself in the Westie! Back to West Bay for a coffee, then I headed home in time to collect my ladies from the train station, and the others ended up in Dawlish for lunch. A great morning's run with some surprisingly nice Autumn weather, although looking at the last picture one might consider it more of a splat than a blat
