    Cortina Uprights.

Assuming the photo below is correct: Those look like original COrtina cast iron uprights, which are pretty much one piece affairs to all intents and purposes. So if the stub axle(s) themselves are worn - unusual, but it happens, rather than just the wheel bearings, more common, then it's a case of replacing the complete thing. The Westfield alloy front uprights as supplied by the factory are a direct swap for what you have now, assuming you still have clamshell wings. As Alessandro said, they will fit your M16 brakes just fine. I don't know what sort of hubs you have, but if using original (heavy) Cortina items, then it's an ideal time to also swap for the much lighter alloy hubs that match the uprights. (Just for reference, the only part that can't be transferred directly from original Ford Cortina uprights to Westfield alloy uprights, are the wing stays, for those using cycle wings; the designs are different for each upright, and attach differently. The Westfield supplied uprights are made by Hi Spec, who also do their own, none Westfield badged version. A slightly different design upright that still fits is also available from Siltech, BUT care would need to be taken that they were compatible with M16's as they are typically used with a Willwood big brake kit.

Nice work on the bumpers...I hope that gets you through the process. I have a comment that is completely unrelated to the bumpers. In looking at the photos of the front suspension something caught my eye. I see that the tie rods attaching the steering rack to the uprights/hubs angle down dramatically as they go out to the upright. It's my understanding that these tie rods should be more or less horizontal and not angled down. I just went and looked at my car (2014 Mega S2000) and see that the tie rod end sits on top of the steering arm where yours attach to the underside of the arm... hence downward angle. I suspect that the steering arms are on the wrong side of the car and this means that the tie-rod end can only mount to the underside as yours are currently. If you swapped them side-to-side then the tie rod would mount to the top side of the arm and be much closer to horizontal. This is important due to the bump-steer that will result from the angled tie rod. As currently set, the wheels will toe-out in a big way when the wheel is pushed upward by a bump. Ideally there is almost zero toe change (with the arm horizontal) but with this downward slope the wheel will toe-out a lot. This can be a serious issue and can cause the car to be very twitchy as the alignment changes when you hit bumps. It's none of my business of course and you should do what seems right to you...if it were me I'd check this out to be sure all is as it should be. Attached is a photo of my car for reference. I hope this all makes sense. dave

    What have we done?

Hi and welcome! There are a load of Toybox car owners in the club, I am one of them! I know Andrew pretty well, as I only live a few miles from his unit and pop in for a coffee now and again. What spec car have you decided to go for? If Andrew cannot source an appropriate hood, you can always use Softbitsforsevens who make aftermarket hoods, covers etc (although lead times tend to be long...).

@Tim Sideways welcome to a great community - a very friendly bunch with a great deal of collective knowledge about everything Westfield

    New to Westfields

As @MattV says, there are probably local members that may be able to view the car for you before you buy.... I've looked at a few (even for buyers abroad) over the last couple of years for potential owners. Obviously, its not like getting a car inspected by a qualified mechanic but most long term owners will know the main things to look for, plus you also know the seller is genuine.

    What have we done?

To cut a long story short, my wife has been banging on about having a Caterham for a few years now. They have never appealed to me, just didn't like them. Some seemed to look like Commer vans, with wheels that sit too far inboard and I just never saw one that changed my mind. Roll forward to a couple of weeks ago when we were out on a tulip rally around Shropshire (organised by Tern Hill Hall) and there was a couple driving a red Westfield. The more I saw it, the more I liked it. Even looked good with the hood up when it started to properly rain and as a result I less begrudgingly agreed to go and have a look at some cars in the flesh with her, so a trip to Toybox was arranged. We both came away with an idea that we could actually get along with a Westfield, but had also developed some ideas as to what boxes it should tick. An email from Natalie at Toybox last night with a few pretty poor photo's of a car they'd just got in was a proper bingo. Correct shape, good colour, engine I know my way around(ish) and some tasty extras meant that we decided to go for it. So the upshot is we've placed a deposit on a car we've not seen in real life, know very little about and can't wait to get hold of! The only issue that we're hoping Andrew can address is the lack of a hood, as that's an essential for us because we like to get around and sometimes rain can't be avoided. Last year we drove to Gibraltar in our 2CV, we've done the Dordogne and Laon Classique in that too. We've also done the Italian lakes in our '72 Spitfire along with many trips to Classic Le Mans. I appreciate that the luggage capacity of the Westfield will be somewhat less than the Citroen or the Triumph, but I'm sure we can do a few French weekends if we share pants. Looking forward to becoming part of the Westfield community and currently absorbing knowledge as fast as I can. Cheers!

The Westfield alloy uprights should fit the M16 caliper just fine. Also, I think the stub axles can be removed from the upright? A few companies sell them separately.

    Cortina Uprights.

I've got a bit of wear on one stub axle and I wondered if it was possible to get new ones anywhere ? I've seen some alloy ones but they are intended for use with alloy calipers, I'd rather stick with original Ford one unless someone knows of some standard pattern ones, thanks.

    Cars For Sale

Does anyone know the current price of a new factory built car? And does anyone have any views (preferably facts) about the effect on used car prices? I would imagine a lack of new builds will eventually impact used values positively in due course.

    Cars For Sale

The summer is always regarded as the time to sell. As for numbers, it's a difficult one, it's certainly not as high as we've seen in an (economically) bad year, it feels about average, but I've not looked at the numbers. One thing I would say, is that while we're aware the factory is selling fully built cars, kit sales seem to be negligible, and the factory builds seem to be somewhat outside of the traditional Club (potential Club) members buyers segment. As a result, I think there are a few more owners that might normally be on the fence about selling their cars deciding to help fill that void in the market. I don't think it's distorted the market particularly, but I do think it's perhaps raised the visibility.

  15. Hi all .. bit of a long shot but does anyone have an intake manifold for dcoe style throttle bodies (the bigger bore the better) to suit the zetec engine ? It's for my track car as a project so doesn't have to look pretty, in fact the worse / cheaper the better as I will end up cutting it up for modifying in time.. cheers.

A good time of the year to sell perhaps? As you say, I doubt it's VED or Insurance based. Though we know the government will continue to increases taxes on ICE to bully us into milk floats!

    Cars For Sale

There seems to be a lot of Westfields for sale at the moment. Is this a normal thing this time of year or is it something else ? The cost of taxing my car is a bit difficult to swallow for what is only a fun car but I wouldn't sell my car because of that.

Don’t know what you mean? MX-5… rust… That was my first track car - My second one was a rust free ‘99 NB - should have kept it really.

Yeah, thanks guys. The non-transparent thing gets me too, but I like the ProAlloy window thing. Good for level, less good for checking flow I guess. I think I’m going to pick up the black coated box and see how it sits. Their other option is satin finish alloy, perhaps less in keeping with the raw alu bits and pieces, and I’m not about to start mirror polishing a header tank… Never thought this morning that by the evening I’d be talking about the aesthetics of an expansion vessel!!

If you can run to that expense it would look absolutely in keeping with the rest of the very high standard of engine bay IMHO, spot on. Only thing is as @Andrzejsays, it's not transparent.

in fact hard to see those readings from seat , maybe its for service / dyne etc. I don't like aluminium tanks — you can't really see the coolant level or condition at a glance. Maybe you could fit a Clio II header tank ? — it's popular and proven in kit cars. I use it in two of mine: a BEC MNR and a road-going Westfield. But in this engine bay mighht be not enough space for it.
