    Tyres for 7's Speed Series

I get that, unsprung weight is definitely a big deal. However, I was wondering if running a much better tire might alleviate (or even completely remove) the disadvantage.
  4. Bichancourt - that will be a nice drive in to Laon. Will look out for a yellow Westfield!

    What the postie brought today!

I have the same one. There is a technique to laying the terminals into it, but it does crimp perfectly once you get the hang of it

    What the postie brought today!

Just managed to pick myself up off the floor in time for delivery of this crimp tool for the Ampseal connectors. Nice bit of kit but £250!! Time to start connecting things up and testing on the workbench (dining table).

That's prompted me to have a look. We have one night in St. Marie des Champs so we don't have to rush a late drive off the ferry and then a few nights in a bijou chateau at Bichancourt, about 40 mins from Laon. Obviously that'll mean a drive in each day of the event, but we have a couple of days either side to just relax and enjoy the French countryside.
  11. We've done about 7 continental trips in Westies, typically ~2000 miles each, mainly around France but also to Austria. Apart from the attractions of weather, scenery and food the roads and traffic are so often more amenable to Westie driving than in the UK. Now I've retired (5 days in) I'm looking forward to getting more miles under my belt! We're thinking of tunnel or cross-channel ferry for the outbound to Spain and return via Santander and Bay of Biscay.

    Tyres for 7's Speed Series

It's down to weight, mainly, LoneWolf. When I was sprinting regularly, I had 2 sets of wheels; 13" for sprinting and 15" for road use and the occasional trackday. Back then though, we were allowed to use list 1B tyres, which then included all or most of the semi-slick trackday tyres, in super soft rubber mix. Then those tyres were taken out of list 1B, and ceased to be approved for road use, so if you continued to run them you had to run in non-roadgoing class, so up against those using slick tyres. Although the weight saving isn't huge, remember it is all unsprung weight, so it is relevant to how well the suspension can deal with undulations in the road surface at racing speeds.
  15. Wow south Spain in the Westfield driving from the UK? That's dedication
  16. @Tim (Sideways) Johnson - Club Treasurer - We'll be there too, but not in the Westfield - although I am thinking of taking the Westfield in 2027. Just need to find someone mad enough to be my navigator! Where are you staying?

    Tyres for 7's Speed Series

I'm throwing it here as I don't know if it's permitted by the rules, but did you guys consider switching to 15" wheels? There are LOADS of good tires in that size, from Nankang CRS to the Yoko A052 (which are trash in 13"), Dunlop Direzza DZ03G and others. Are the 15" wheels so much worse than 13" for competition use, even with the much better rubber available?

If it is dry toyo r888r seem popular. Road legal and class 1b for mot road going cars like my westy. My avon zv7 on the other hand are now no longer allowed, bog standard road tyres group 1a for years, i used in the wet and driving to tesco but I have to throw them away now because avon got taken over by nova. Uniroyal rain sport are supposed to be good 1a.

  25. going on with making my track westfield road (almost ) legal ... got headlights and hosings (aliexpress). Unfortunately, due to my own oversight, I ordered two pairs of lamps instead of one pair A few small modifications were needed right away — the screws securing the lamp housing bracket were sticking into the inside of the housing, which made it impossible to fit the insert (the actual lamp). They had to be mounted the other way around, with the rounded heads facing inside the housing and the nuts on the outside. And yeah… they’re kind of big and heavy compared to my previous “lamps,” which I made myself from LED strip, an aluminum tube, and duct tape Ideally, lightweight, smaller Dominator-type LED headlights with built-in sidelights would be best. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any. I did find Dominator-style lights with an LED DRL ring, but without sidelights. Maybe on the next attempt. I spent so much time drilling different elements to reduce weight, and now these bricks sit high and far out front — the worst possible position for ballast… But hey, it will be the same in that area as a brand-new Westfield SE.NA! (just faster )
