Just paid for me and my plus one

As fortune would have it, I managed to buy 2 (slightly used) R888Rs from Ebay which haved just arrived... now just need to find a place that'll fit them to my steelies.

Tangent - imitation being the greatest form of flattery - where did you get the clamps for your roof on the roll bar? or are they made… does that setup work well?

I like the harness hook idea!

Given that I drive without a seat (on my flowery cushions 🤪), I have been concerned about not having a headrest and potential whiplash or roll bar head banging in the event of a crash. I’ve made a few improvements to my workbench, including a jigsaw setup which allows for accurate, square cuts (a revelation in itself) so have finally been able to have a go at sorting this out. I used the outline of the passenger seat as a template and a piece of very strong laminated board to make it from. It is riveted to the chassis rail and attached to the roll bar diagonal using a clamp, all very solid. Despite how it may appear in the images, the pad is about the same distance forward as the head rest on the passenger side so is quite comfortable. The pad is rear half high density foam and front half lower density so it should absorb energy well and be comfortable. Not totally happy with my vinyl wrapping or a couple of other aspects but overall I pleased with it. V2.0 might be made from CF and feature a few improvements….. this one weighs about 750g, so not too bad. Next project is to do an expanding foam seat so I’m a bit more comfortable. Watch this space, hopefully it won’t go horribly wrong and fill the whole car! I have plenty of plastic sheeting and very large and strong plastic bag! Planning on using about half the mix 🤞🤞

New driving shoes (to match the car, of course): They are surprisingly comfortable for shoes so narrow and should make it easier to drive The Wench without catching two pedals at once (although I wouldn’t recommend walking medium or long distances in them as they have zero arch support). They’re an early birthday present, as I’m now taking a leaf out of my late mother’s playbook. You could not give her a birthday or Christmas present even a day early or she’d open them if she was left alone. Her excuse afterwards was always “I’m getting old - I might not make it until then.”, an excuse she first started using at age 43 and carried on until she passed away at age 74.

What3words is super handy. I wish more people would use it.

One thing I did do was get the tank as empty as possible then from jerry cans put in ¼ then ½ then ¾ then the full amount of fuel for whatever size tank you have and (while parked in your garage with ignition on) see where the needle sits in relation to the relevant gauge marks. I recommend taking pics of each level for future reference, it's easy to forget 6 months down the road and you only want to do this once if at all possible! Of course it will not read accurately when on the move but at least you know when you park up for your local WSCC meet and brekkie that whatever it's reading when you've finished your full English will pretty accurately reflect what is actually in the tank at that moment. Parked on level ground of course! Don't forget - take pics of the gauge readings!

Yes, but normally the manufacturer specifies "x" no. of miles or, "y" no. of year/months. Not many of us hit the mileage limits, but we certainly do hit the date limits. There's a certain argument to say that standing around for long lengths of time before suddenly working hard is probably a bit tougher on things like belts and other fast moving rubber parts; as it gives them time to age harden, before thrashing them at speed again!

Great advice for any kit, and I agree, but I have found mine to be quite reliable and reasonably accurate. This is if it's stationary, when moving the gauge does go up and down a bit! I generally keep mine above halfway to be safe and never below ¼ full.

If the tyres are ancient - check the other important rubber bits.... Aux and Cam belts (if fitted) - previous owner of mine hadn't changed the cam belt in 24 years..... "the haynes manual for the engine, says change every 60k miles, I've only done 9k....." It came home via Shipley.....

Thanks. I seem to remember some of that from looking before, didn't know about wheel studs. The ones it has aren't that long so would probably need changing. The original roll hoop is more show cage quality so that might be an issue. I'm not overly keen on it for road use but there aren't many options.
