New Regulations on personal plates to be introduced 2026
dvd8n replied to Ross the Scottish exile's topic in The Start Line
I did find an interesting post from a supplier that states that getting a stick on number plate to actually conform to BS AU 145D is impossible due to bending, impact and vibration tests required. The grammar and spelling is a bit idiosyncratic but the information seems reasonable: https://numberplateclinic.co.uk/stick-on-registration-plates/ - Today

New Regulations on personal plates to be introduced 2026

Just to stir the pot a bit more.... Here in Nebraska, we have a proviso that you can run only a rear plate, IF your car was designed without a front mount. Costs an extra $50/year---usual govt graft, pay more/get less Roughly 1/2 of the US are rear plate only, and we join them in 2029 -

No, having no plate could be accidental, lack of checking on the car before starting a journey, the result of theft etc. Whereas an “illegal” plate demonstrated “intent”. ie you knew the law and deliberately with a forethought ignored it and fitted something that even warned you it was not road legal. You have to remember, much like my attempt to pervert the course of justice example earlier, anything that very obviously shows you knew it was wrong, and or illegal but did it anyway, especially if you compounded things by trying to avoid prosecution will potentially always be treated more harshly, because it goes against the grain of how UK law and in turn Policing by consent work. -

The point I’m making is the law looks more lenient on no plate than it does on a plate that’s say too small, when you look at both offences no plate would suggest the worse of the 2 -

Only if they choose to give you a DPN. if court proceedings are issued which might happen if you committed another offence at the same time then it’s a level 3 fine which is £1000. -

Errr… not just up your way. A certain ex-westy-now-lotus owner that I know, who shall remain nameless, might have used such a device in the 80’s… allegedly found a photo of him on the bike in question -

Because Westfield & Caterham 7 type design models were originally made before 1990 they qualify to use these tyres is the ruling has been given by MSUK. -

Would a plate with motorbike sized digits fit between the front and intake? Yours looks like a bike sized plate. -

List 1b tyres - vehicle registration date etc.
Crash test dummy posted a topic in 7s Speed Series Discussion
Not strictly a Speed Series question but hopefully those in the know might be looking here. So, list 1b has a number of tyres annotated that are designated only for use on vehicles registered before 1/10/90. There is a bit of ambiguity in that it talks about tyres "designed" for use on vehicles registered before the relevant date but then goes on to say that they will only be valid for vehicles registered before the relevant date. Not strictly the same thing. However............... I've recently (in the couple of weekends) seen some cars running the annotated tyres on cars that are clearly registered post 1.10.90. and they are run by people I would generally expect to be S*** hot on the MSUK rules. The question therefore is, what do they know that I don't? Is anyone aware of any MSUK rulings or other precedents that could be in play? -
Sorry just seen this I will have a look and let you know @Hadz

Ah yes, flippy plates! Many years ago, there was a Cheshire biker, who decided it would be a great idea to fit his rear number plate on a springloaded panel the spring holding it in the normal position. He then had some kind of pull cord attached, so, when passing cameras etc, he could pull it and fold the plate up out of site. Cheshire Police had quite an album of him apparently. Then one day, an ex copper I know happened to see the photos and burst out laughing. Being a biker himself, he recognised the leathers/helmet design etc and knew who it was. ANd thus our care free biker rocked up home one day, only to find said office waiting for him on his drive. A quick check of the bike confirmed the device was still there. The charge he faced for the device was far more serious, and cost him far more than the the fines for the speeding would have done, even totalled up. (It's a long time ago now, so I can't remember, I want to say they got him on a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice, but memory is hazy on that one.) Said Police officer, not well known amongst his colleagues for his athleticism in chasing down miscreants, (desk jockey), dined out on that arrest for years. -

I'll add one further one - a member once attached his front number plate from the top by drilling holes and using zip ties loosely, so that when his car was in motion, the wind pushed the number plate flat under the nose. Not only did the police not buy his "temporary fix" excuse, because the plate was drilled through the top and not the middle, they threatened him with possible prosecution for deliberately concealing his number plate. It's a case of "welcome to the consequences of your actions"... -

...And there absolutely have been first hand accounts - mainly Caterham owners from the posts I've read over the years, of Police actively targeting the number pate issue on Seven style cars. So while really rare, it does happen. You pay your money and make your choice! Including accepting with grace, the outcomes of those choices! And as Scott said, don't forget, if for any reason, the Police feel they have an issue with you, or your manner of driving, they absolutely can use it as an excuse to stop you and fish for further possible offenses. Or sometimes just to give you a bollocking! I'll never forget, many, many years ago, arriving slightly late to a Cheshire & N. Staffs Area meet at the Whipping Stocks, (well before I was AO), to find a Police 4x4 slowly scouting around the car park, and those Westfields already there. Before they blocked the exit, climbed out, and gave a stern warning, (but no tickets, this time), to all those whose front number plates had "fallen off" or had otherwise troublesome plates. They left having made a few notes, with the usual "we'll be keeping an eye out for you" line. So no, I'm afraid we're not invisible to the Police, they just usually choose to ignore us. -
No worries. PM sent. Thanks
