I resent that comment - mine is most definitely a GRP-top 😁

10k will get you a lovely westy, it's what mine cost me and it's a factory built car on an age related plate (not Q) zetec engine on throttle bodies and less than 12k miles when I bought it, it's a cracker. Best wishes for your search, it will be fun !

This is important! Make sure that the car that you are looking at is registered properly. In my opinion, it's the first question that you should ask.

Welcome! Some great points made already, the comment about you’re buying the builder/previous owner as much as the actual car is so very true! Try and soak up, via the forum, social media etc, as much info as you can about the brands of car you’re interested in; in particular, build threads are typically great for really getting to know a marque up close and personal, and seeing how builders achieve things. It helps hugely when it comes to looking at cars for sale, as you already have some familiarity. Choosing a spec that you want is tricky, sometimes it’s easier to put a list together, first must haves - the deal breakers if the car doesn’t have them, then the “would likes”, this can include things you could add later, given the right car comes up with your must haves. However, most “upgrades” on these sorts of car don’t necessarily add much value to the base price, but some do make it much more desirable. So it’s rare to get anything like the individual cost of the upgrade back at selling time. Be aware of this, and be aware that it might cost more than you think to change certain things. The big ones in this category are bodywork and engines. It’s been a rule of thumb for instance, for years, that an engine swap - to a different brand or model of engine, will cost the typical owner, doing as much as they can themselves, around £2/2500 on top of the price of the new engine! Likewise, if changing bodywork, new parts are very expensive, and even if you go for second hand, and refurb. them yourself, if you have to get them resprayed to all match, you may pay any where from £2000 upwards. On top of the S/H panel prices themselves. Of course, if you can repaint yourself, or you have lots of donor engine parts laying around around, and can fabricate parts like mounts, exhausts etc, these cost can reduce a lot. But none the less, try and get the engine and body you want from the start. (A Redtop Vauxhall C20XE is a cracker in a Westfield, btw.) And if buying a project, cost up what you’d have to do before buying, and make sure the sale price factors that in! -
I like this 2 car garage.

Hi Callum. Read and find out as much as you can before buying anything. Not just about specific models but also kit cars in general. I was wondering about the car you looked at. It might have appeared to be 50 years old due to the registration letter but would have been built far more recently. Kit cars can be registered in a variety of ways so you need to be careful and make sure it's been done properly. There are probably some around still described as Cortinas and escorts on the logbook.

Hi MattV, thanks for the reply. I won't be seeing many, if any, track days. I live miles away from the nearest circuit, but I have some incredible roads on my doorstep. So it will be a weekend/evening/early morning car for spirited road driving. My wife isn't a fan, so touring is probably off the table 😂

Hi Callum, welcome to the club! There’s a Westfield for everyone, but if you can give more details on what your planning to use it for then people will be able to give more advice - are you looking for a track car or something more touring focused for example? Whatever you buy can be turned into whatever you wish, but worth starting with a base car as close to your ideal spec as possible. With a lot of these cars you’re buying the builder of it rather than the car itself - 2 seemingly identical cars can be very different ownership propositions depending on the skill and attention to detail of the builder / previous owner. So things to look for are more related to how well it’s been put together rather than individual parts. Best advice is to look for your local meet and go along to see as many cars as you can. We’re a friendly bunch so sure you’ll be able to hitch a ride in a few to narrow down your choice

Hi everyone I'm new to the world of Westfields. A couple of weeks ago I had a fairly big accident in my weekend car. Luckily there were no serious injuries, but its left me in the market for a replacement toy. I had always fancied a Caterham, however, with my budget as it is (10k+-) I found that I was scraping the barrel somewhat with Caterhams. That led me to consider other alternatives. The first car I looked at was a local Formula 27 with a Rover V8. It seemed like a lovely thing and was bursting with character. However, there isn't a lot of information out there about them. This particular one was 50 odd years old too. As an ownership prospect, I decided it wasn't for me. That's led me to seriously consider a Westfield. The more I've learned about Westfields, the more excited I've become at the prospect of owning one. I'm currently looking at a very nice looking car with a Red Top. What advice could you guys give to someone getting into Westfields for the first time? Are there any specific things to look out for, or things to be aware of with them? Is there anything you wish you had known before you bought your first Westfield? Does anyone have any experience of red top engines in Westfields? Thank you so much for having me, and I hope to speak to some of you soon 👍

Not been on much since last post. Fixed the initial cut out problem with the wiring but seemed tonight doing it now and again in 3rd when going uphill under full power - will need to check the fuel float again. In other news, got the pro race 1.2s on wrapped in new rainsport 5s, much better. Picked up a C7 RS6 as a new daily last month also. Silly power, have to say though had the Westfield out tonight and just a complete different type of fun!

1600 CVH engine on twin 40 Webers, type 9 sierra 5 speed gearbox and diff. Discs all round with EBC brake pads on front. The car was built (and first registered) in 1998 by Westfield. Full hood and side screens, tonneau cover, lockable boot lid, ducted nose cone. Immobiliser. Also recently had USB socket fitted into cockpit for convenience. The car has done less than 11,500 miles in total. The last MOT was on 12/6/25. I am the third owner and bought the car in 2008 since when it has always been garaged. Serviced by Lotus Seven / Westfield garage specialists and very well maintained. Comes with large file of paperwork including original Westfield bill of sale. Can come with a collection of spares including a set of Team Dynamic 16” in gloss black (I believe they are PRO Race 1.2's) with Toyo R888s with plenty of tread - £500. Also available (for current cvh engine) higher flow head, higher profile cam and adjustable cam pulley. Original steering wheel as in photo - for negotiation / comes with car at right price. Can also come with a Blacktop Zetec engine upgrade project including some of the parts required - exhaust manifold, and (from Westfield) the alternator and engine mounts. Currently stripped down but uprated ARP conrod bolts added and ready for rebuild and installation - for negotiation. If interested also the engine stand, crane and hoist. Reason for Sale - started my own business and don't have spare time, so car just not getting used much - would prefer someone else enjoy it, rather than being locked in garage.
