Curborough - Sunday 24th August @10am
Rob Hunter - Club Secretary posted a topic in Local Area Meets, Events & Kit Car Shows
Hi, Tomorrow morning I'll be doing the full Obi Wan impression to bring some balance to the "force"..... I'm taking the Westfield to the Caterham and Lotus 7 Club meeting at Curborough! 😂 I've been the last few years and in all seriousness and we have been welcomed by the Caterham crew. We are all just "seven" fans after all! I'll be aiming to land about 10am if anyone fancies joining me to watch the track action 👍 -
That'll be great thanks! I'd definitely only fit the scratch resistant type, makes sense to me.

Disadvantages of a full Cage ?
Kit Car Electronics and Essex AO replied to Steve G.'s topic in The Start Line
Lexan and Makralon are trade names for polycarbonate, but the non scratch hardened surface is worth looking for. Costs more though, so could always try a normal one first. I fitted edge trim and yes you could use 2 side clamps and rest on the cowl and cage. I'll take some photos later -
Would it work without the windscreen mounts? And it looks like you've protected the edges with U trim?
-
I don't suppose you know the dimensions of yours do you? I've found some on eBay that will cut to size. It's not branded Makrolon but it is polycarbonate. Is there any difference apart from the name? It's UV protected, shatter resistant but doesn't mention scatch resistance.

I used 5mm I think, cut easily with a coarse jigsaw. The key is to get a scratch coated polycarbonate, not acrylic -
Hmmm, sounds like an idea to try. Any particular thickness? Is it easy to cut without shattering or cracking?

Disadvantages of a full Cage ?

You could fully clamp one to the cage without needing the side supports, then just remove for mots or heavy rain/track days (that's what I do). I used Makralon AR (scratch resistant coating) and it's held up brilliantly as well as being optically clear -
I wanted to try one of those short screens with my cage, to give a bigger wind deflection but without having to have a full screen and wipers etc. Can't recall who used to make them, MoFast maybe, but they no longer do so.
-
I have to say I'm not sure I entirely agree with that. Disadvantages... They are not cheap You have to fit one (skills required) They are heavy so reduce the power to weight (the weight-saving guys would have a meltdown) and the cars agility In an accident if you are not wearing a helmet they can kill you For some people it can make getting in and out tricky They collect flies especially at night 🤣

Put simply there are no disadvantages and its much safer
-
It's not the flies and bugs that are the real issue after dark in my neighborhood it's more the large herd of deer im seriously considering a full cage myself .
-
It's mainly driving in the dark will give you that issue, the fly count after daytime blats isn't too bad tbf.

I'm glad someone else has the same issue with flies i only run an rac rollback at present I drive a fair bit after dark so every couple of trips out the bar looks like it's covered in fibreglass or should I say flyberglass it's a job to clean can only imagine a whole cage being a nightmare
-
I thought I had spoken to custom cages. I don't think anything is listed on their website, did you have to leave the car with them ?

I would expect it to cost more than Cagedlaser to be honest (and probablu weigh more) but I do like the way it looks -
Yeah you're right, just seen the link. It looks nice for competition, might be too much for road use 🤔 Not sure about the price, however they list free shipping in UK and EU on their website...
