Tel's Tales Issue 005
Well round 2 has now taken place and the "wet" rule came into place even though it was not wet but a cold track with not a lot of grip so well done to the 3 drivers who got themselves out there.
Martin Hepworth's report is attached so thanks to him for putting pen to paper.
The 3 sisters event is on 14th April and has attracted about 9 entrants as Richard James had to withdraw due to is car not being ready. Tim Nunn has now registered for class G ( well done mate) and will be battling with me and Matt Turner for the points but the forecast has changed from dry and 19deg C to rain all day and 8deg C !!!!!!!
Westfield Speed Series 2013 - Round 2.
Round two of the Speed Series took place Lydden Hill in Kent. Despite being a delightful and challenging circuit it only attracted Three Speed Series Competitors, possibly due to being so early in the season and some of the “Southern” regulars were not yet ready. The Sprint was organised by the Tonbridge Wells Motor Club as part of a South East Motor Sport Enthusiasts Club combined Sprint and Race meeting. Under this format the Sprint is held on the Saturday morning and on the face of it Sprint competitors seem to be getting a raw deal. However, these events have a smaller entry and the organisation is very slick, there is a practice run of 2.7 laps of the 1 mile circuit and 2 timed runs of 1.7 laps. This event was also a round of the British Sprint Championship. On the weekend of the event Kent was the coldest place in England with grey cloud cover, and a biting Easterly wind that contained the odd snowflake.
Competitors were Martin Hepworth and Graham Frankland in Class C and David Hussey in Class E. It was also good to see Matt Hilman in the Paddock busy with the SBD team’s single seaters but still finding time to observe our runs and provide encouragement and pearls of wisdom, thanks Matt. Practice runs went without drama in the freezing cold with David out in front and Graham leading Martin by around 2 seconds. The status quo was maintained for the first timed run but the conditions were the same and this was reflected in the times, it was difficult to get any temperature into the tyres. In the second and final run Martin piped Graham by half a second to take the Class C honours with David improving as well.
An enjoyable days sprinting, the Lydden Hill circuit may only be a mile long but it’s fast with challenging corners and surprising changes in elevation. Added to this the SEMSEC combined Sprint and Race weekends work really well, there are only three of these events a year and we are lucky to have all three in our championship, well done the SSOC.
