Part 4 - Not quite standing still....

blog-0858895001363011174.jpgWell hello. Been a while since my last update, not been too idle and have progressed a little.

Notably the rear diff is now in situ in its reaplendant orange livery and front & rear uprights and hubs assembled.

I managed to find a friendly mechanic to tease(!) out the rear bearings and replace with new - rear uprights now in place. On assembly I did find the treaded bar which passes through the lower wishbone bushes to be a very tight fit - need to review this as this will need to come out when the suspension is setup..... what have the other SDV builders found with these?

Lots of time spent painting refurbed suspension components ready for fitment.

Drive shafts to be checked and refurbed next. Bought some nice new CV boots - just now got to figure how to get them on.

Started to attack the wiring harness - rear harness in place and tidied. Main harness draped over the car and I am working on the courage to start stripping this back.

Currently distracted by the engine sitting in its stand - what do I do with this? Has 125,000 on the clock and was running fine when removed form Mazda. Do I stick it in as is and get the car finished, revisting it later or get it rebuilt now? Can't make up my mind. Certainly will save some money if i defer, which can then go on other trinkets and shiny items, but it will need some work eventually......

Pick up of completion kit scheduled for 1st week in April, so getting some space cleared to store. Orange with black wheel arches f&r. Ordered one of the new 1800 exhaust maifolds while I was at it, so hopefully it will be ready at the same time.

Sunday was spent in a freezing carpark at Silverstone circuit on a Westfield Experience day. Fantastic fun, but sadly my autotesting skills of 30 years ago seem to have deserted me and my efforts can be summed up as 'Ambitious but Rubbish'. Lots of tyre squeeling and spinning in every direction but where I intended showed I still have enthusiasm, but this has obviously replaced any skill I (thought) I once had :(. I did improve as the day went on, but still need many hours of practice before ever coming close to the almost inch perfect placement of the car by Simon the instructor on hand. Recommended if you get the chance.

Will try to get some more build pictures up soon.

Take care. :)

Did you see me on the recovery truck on Sunday? I waved!

I had to file the bushes slightly to get the threaded bar in one the drivers side. Passenger side seemed a bit more compliant.

To give you some comfort my engine has done 144k and is just 1bhp shy of factory power. Certainly a case of if it's not broke don't fix it with these engines. You might like to pick up another engine and work on it once your car is on the road? Then just swap it out once it's got some nice bits on it!

I'm hoping to pick up my manifold over the Easter holidays too. You never know - may see you there!

Dommos suggestion is exactly whay I did, I picked up a secondhand engine and gearbox for £82 plus courier, spent some time cleaning and replacing seals etc, and then swapped it into the car.

I now have two engines in the garden in various stated of assembly, and my plan is to make one good one out of the two spares.

Makes sense - probably go with that methodology. Now for that wiring loom..........
