Replacement MkII MX5 Key & Remote fob help!

Hi all...

SWMBO has 'mislaid' a key and remote fob for her mkII MX5. (the remote fob is a separate item to the key)

I've told her she should get a replacement key asap wherever she can so she at least has one in case of further 'mislaying'!

I think a new key should be fairly easy to get.

Dealer replacement fob is ridiculously expensive.

So any suggestions as to reduce the costs of replacement would be much appreciated.

We're Manchester Area based.

Get a new missus.    ;)   :t-up:

I think many of the Timpsons do replacement keys for modern vehicles now, but key fob may be a main dealer job. :(

What I thought   (NOT the missus bit! :p )

Was hoping to avoid main dealer prices (Well she is - I'm not paying for it)

Hopefully the collective will have other constructive suggestions.  ???

Thanks,

But does this require a dealer to program it for her MX5?

I do locksmithing, but stopped doing cars two years ago due to the large range of keys and fobs and the costs and the cost of keeping upto date :( :( :(

So back to the problem

You have a key good :)

Cheep option

Get two blanks cut locally the put the original behind the dash by the transducer pick up coil to read the chip in the key

£20 sorted :)

Second option :(

Get a price from main dealer

Than ring local auto locksmiths and us the dealer price to force them down a bit :)

Third option

Lose other key

Have car towed into main dealer

Hire a car for a week while off the road

Pay the tow in charge, garage charges normlly about £750 now :(

The new Mazda key system is on the same as the new ford system

Plug into diagnostics

Retrieve a code

Go online to Mazda main computer with code

Retrieve response code

Enter response code onto ECU

Start car

You might be able to manually reprogram the remote

Turn ignition on the off about 10 times till it bleeps

Then press lock unlock buttons on remote

Then quickly press lock unlock button on second remote

Both should then program

I'm out now and will check later tonight about programming fobs

What year car is it?

Is it uk spec ?

My phone numbers on my profile if you want a chat

Try auto locksmiths association for local reliably auto locksmith

Muchly Ta's Andy

Its a 2003 UK 1.8 MX5 Mk2

The key is separate to the fob. She currently has 1 key plus 1 fob. I'll suggest she goes for your cheap option initially.

But she does want a replacement fob so she can open the boot remotely for shopping!

Let me know when's best to phone you.

Hi yes 2001 2002 they swapped over to the cambus system I've explained

Pre 2001 the keys could have been cloned without need to plug into car and go to main computer

Call any time I'm working

It's a bit noise

But in hands free so can speak today

Try one of the MX5 owners forum, sure they will know how to replace lost keys and remotes.

Ok here we go

Mx5 remote programming

You have 140 seconds to

Close all doors

Open drivers door

Turn key on the off and remove key 3 times

Press and release drivers courtesy light 3 times

A single bleep should be heard

If not start again with drivers door open but not for 40 seconds to allow system reset

Press any button on each remote twice to program

Simples ;)

You will still need a key cutting and chip programming onto ECU to be able to start the car don't forget

Turns out she's now got 1 key but NO remote fob!

Appears the car only came with 1 fob, so hoping it doesn't need one to start. She's been in a pool car this week and is going to try starting hers this morning.

PANIC over....

She's 'unmislaid' them!

Typical SWMBO.
