JeffC Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 Ive been on quite a lot of forums over the last 7 years and without doubt this has to be the most friendly with people from all walks of life that most of the time get along with the usual banter but why ? what makes people on here different or normal I often read through the Caterham owners forum and although ive owned 2 Caterhams after reading the cattyness and some of the b*****k posted on blatchat Ive never had an inclination to join, Ive posted a few times on the Caterham part of pistonheads and there are some sensible people respond but the same ******s seem to frequent there too I always thought the worst for attracting headcases was pistonheads but since looking for a Porshe and researching on a few Porsche forums Ive discovered forum snobbery that is in a different league to anything Ive ever seen from what Ive seen anything other than owning a 997 Gts rs you are not worthy of a response so what makes people like that when they are sat on a computer with a keyboard in front of them ? I could be wrong but face to face would they be so up their own discuss Quote
stephenh Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 Might it be that a lot of the people who post on Pistonheads are young loud mouths, the sort who drive round town centres in the evenings with megawatt sound systems in their hatchback, and the windows wound right down so everyone can "enjoy" their "music"? Nick Algar - Competition Secretary Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I think it's the self build aspect of our cars Jeff, most people on here get more performance or fun, by physically doing things themselves, even if it is buying a set of parts and fitting themselves. ie they muck in and get the job done. The Caterham and Porsche guys are much more into dropping the car of somewhere and spending s**t loads of cash getting it done, so they then want to boast about how good it is to justify the s**t loads of cash they have spent on it and that breeds an attitude. On here people are more willing to admit they spent money on stuff, but regetted it. or it did not work. ie they are more Honest about things. But also generally most idiots get short shrift Quote
slater Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I Think you hit the nail on the head Jeff when you mentioned normal people, people who own a car for what it is not how much it cost. QUOTE 997 Gts rs you are not worthy of a response was into classic porches and once attended a christmass dinner with the PCGB one of the chaps at our table was saying he had just paid 8 grand to have his GT3 detailed, when asked how many mile a year he drov it the answer was none unless the weather was sunny with no chance of rain The only other forum I have enjoyed and was populated by like minded folk was DDK a classic porsche forum, again populated by people who loved the car and drove them. lewis Quote
lippydave Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 For whatever reasons, Westies seem to attract people who are a bit more "hands on" with both cars and life in general. I do agree too with the view that most ******s get short shrift here and quickly fade away when they realise most normal folk here can see right through their infantile BS. I reckon the average age of posters here is probably much higher than most forums....and the old adage is: "To be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid..." I think most here have followed that principle through... (Although personally I've gone for old and yet still stupid....) There is a goodly amount of merriment, humour and much p*sstaking here but there is a general absence of malice and a genuine honest desire to assist others either with their Westies or other stuff... Any forum or chat room etc is only the sum of it's members and contributors..... The fact that this a great site is because of the great members...Simples.... Quote
peterg Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 I've been on Blatchat since long before it went members only and there was an awful lot more personal flak and b*llox posted in those days.... most of the main advocates of that are now on PH it's quietened down a fair bit now with just the occasional fracas which is normally nipped in the bud although it can seem a bit dull after a while. I've made several friends over there despite never owning a Caterham in my life, I've bought bits (from whole cars - we still have the VW Golf 5 years down the line - to a desk) and sold (mostly tools and general stuff) and never had a problem with any of it. I've had help moving gear around and advice way off-topic from cars too. In the WSCC I have been lucky enough to have also made a lot of friends who have helped me at various times, I've bought and sold stuff - and hopefully no one has a problem with my stuff but would tell me if they did. Despite not owning a Westfield since 2002 (christ, is it really THAT long ago...) I felt so much a part of this club that I wanted to put something back and so spent the last four years organising and running the WSCC Club Weekend at Curborough and with the help of a lot of other people who volunteered their time 'on the day' I think it has always been enjoyed by most if not all the people attending them (can't please everyone though as I've found out over the years...) I've recently been going through a bit of a personal crisis that I don't intend going public about but will say that those members who know what's been happening have been truly great friends. Thanks guys and can I just be the first to wish everyone on here a Happy Christmas and a prosperous and peaceful New Year Quote
Tigger Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 ahh shut up you toffee nose feckers for once, Steve has said something I agree with Quote
Matta Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 The only other forum I've found as genuinely usefull as WSCC was the MGCars one. I owned/rebuilt a number of Midgets before getting my Westie and that forum was generally populated with similar like-minded individuals. Obviously where was the occasional t****r too though but it's a forum I still visit from time to time. Excellent technical content and a fantastic resource for just about anything Midget/Sprite related. Matt Quote
