Hi all

My Westie started misfiring about 4000RPM last week and after some diagnostics (I put points back in the Dizzy) I found that the ignition module fitted is no longer working.

Any advise on a good make that will be good. Not looking for anything really flashy that needs a degree to maintain and program.

You really ought to go for a 3d system and drop the dizzy IMO.  Not any experience of that device but have used similar devices in past lives to good effect , but seriously suggest you look at 3d , even if not set upmperfectly you will have a worthwhile improvement

Using a ECU to control Ignition only

and also using a TPS (Throttle position sensor) to measure Throttle opening

Megajolt is a system that seems well recommended by those that have fitted it

Depends how much diy you fancy taking on   ???

There is a lot on MJ on this site and other ECU's are available depending on your diy ability.

Basic adavantages are:

1. all electronic, cleaner spark, no scatter at hi revs caused by play in dizzy shaft

2. Part throttle advance  your set up will be lacking the vacum advance so there will be no part throttle advance- which gives better pickup from part throttle and better economy, less carb spit, flat spots etc.

3. ability to get timing right throughout the engine range

4. Adjusting idle advance can enable you to get carb butterflies is the correct position to give good transistion from idle to main circuits. A lot of carb compliants are igntion problems !

5 .digtial outputs enable you to make shift lights

The 3D bit is that you baically have an ignition timing map that that varies both with rpm and throttle opening  ( so you could say have 20deg advance at full thorttle 3000 revs increasing to 40 deg as the throttle backed off, still at 3000 rpm). A dizzy based system without vac advance ( not practical with twin 40's) only have an advance curve set by rpm. The dizzy can never give the correct advance except at full throttle.

Everything Hammy said and just to add that my MJ sorted out all flat spots, stopped carb spitting, improved idle and generally made the Westy a much better drive.

Simple to fit and not expensive.

Gets my vote every time!

Otherwise the Aldon Ignitor is a straight points substitute.

Second the MJ idea....

although possibly not quite as simple to install as one would like.... for me, the main issue was getting a soltion for the VR sensor...But I think someone sells brackets for the pinto....defo a worth whill upgrade.

So just how easy/difficult is fitting megajolt?

I'm thinking of having a bash myself but am not sure about the MAP or TPS bit.

With MAP do you have to drill and tap your inlet manifold and do you have to remove it from the car to do it?

With TPS - just where do you fit the sensor on twin 40 Webers?

And what happens to the distributer? do you remove it and blank it off or just leave it there?

MAP is a waste of time unless you can tap in to each runner on the inlet. TPS is the way to go. There are adapters/mounts to fit TPS's on to Webers.

Agree....and if you have a sportier cam the MAP will be double useless...

Just stick with a TPS.....You can buy or make little adaptors to attached to the spindle, and buy or make a bracket (emerald do them for £2).

You would also need a lap top, and vr sensor set up (again, this can be made or bought).

I think the worst bit of this sort of install is the software set up...but once done, you will never look back.....Until of course you decvide to upgrade to fuel injection :-)

I would tend to leave it fitted as the distributor drives the oil pump.

hello Nik,

I fitted Megajolt to the Pinto engine in my car last year. Considerable improvement, with the car more drivable and it eliminated a flat spot around 3000rpm.

I got most of the bits from Trigger Wheels. This included the trigger wheel, which I mounted on the crank pulley, the sensor, sensor bracket, the megajolt box of tricks, the Ford EDIS ignition controller, the coilpack , HT leads and a bumper selection of wires. I purchased a throttle position sensor from Webcon that mounted directly on the carburettor spindle.

I still needed to do a bit of fabrication to mount the trigger wheel to the pulley, fitting a peg to stop it rotating and going out of alignment. The sensor bracket also needed some additions to make a solid assembly that won't vibrate.

I found it pretty simple to fit, but then working on electrics doesn't scare me. Lots of information on the web and some good advice from this forum helped.

I can post some pictures of my megajolt set up if your interested. Will need to wait till the weekend and there is daylight while I'm at home.
