Although it's not 100% confirmed I'm pretty sure my router is kapuut. I cannot get a connection, I haven't proved the broadband connection but our phones still work and I've been paying the bills.

Last week the p.c.'s which are hard wired to the router were struggling to get a connection, when I investigated the router was very hot so i moved it and rebooted it, this seemed to sort it out.

Over the weekend the connection has been ok but very slow.

Yesterday afternoon there was no broadband connection on the wifi connections and the hard wired connections had limited or no connectivity so no broadband on them either.

I've tried rebooting the router, I even left it off for about 4 hours to make sure it was cooled down but still no connection, the adsl light on the front never goes solid just keeps flashing every couple of minutes.

Anyway assuming its kapuut can anyone recommend a decent but reasonable priced replacement.

It needs wifi for: laptops and nintendo DS/Wii

It needs 4 wired connections for:

2 p.c.'s,

1 printer which all the hard wired and wifi connections print to, (very important)

1 for an ethernet extender (uses mains network to provide connection for xbox)

Any advice gratefully received, feels like my arms have been cut off at the moment!

Edited to add my current one is a D-Link 604t, I had to flash this with some austrailian firmware to get the nintendo ds's working with it so something which will do this out of the box would be great

cheers peter, do you know if its compatible with the nintendo ds? and allow all connected to it to print to the printer?

I had to flash the router with some austrailian firmware to get the ds's working and my previous router wouldn't work with the printer.

make sure you check with BT that the broadband is working or try a friends unit as this is symptomatic of the BB being down, whether your phone is working or not

Phone is analogue and BB is a digital signal carried over the same wires so the BB can be down (usually is tbh) with the phone working nicely.

first thing is to change the filter on the line plus try swapping cables -

you can also check the SNR on the line - ours was very low at just 7 so a phone call to BT was made - they incresed SNR which has a negative effect apparently of reducing the speed

all gobbleygook to me  :durr:

Re:the Nintendo, it should be fine as their info online says it is compatible.

but as above you need to verify that you don't have a broadband connection problem before looking at new hardware  ;)

cheers guys i'll try and borrow a router and check out the connection, do I just ring BT? presumably it's their line even though I buy my service from someone else?

It does vary Exchange to Exchange, but typically you need to raise a fault report with your provider first, they will then if necessary escalate it to BT. They should also be able to check your line out first.

Thats the worse thing about broadband, when there's a problem you can't get online to sort it out!

I used Sky to provide my broadband on a BT line for some time.

I initially had a fault which I reported to Sky. They were excellent in chasing right through the systems resulting in a set of 'diggers' from BT turning up on my doorstep.

Contact your broadband provider and push through that route.

Will do some more checks when i get home then give them a call.

my provider is Plus.net which I believe is actually owned by BT now? They have a comprehensive broadband checking system on their website to work through but its as much use as a chocolate fire guard if you can't connect in the first place.
