boris77
As already mentioned get him something old and simple. He will dent it and no doubt thrash the guts out of it. I certainly did. Peugoet 205 1.8 diesel (no turbo)? Slow but v good on fuel. Make him service it himself as well, he'll get a better appriciation.
Mark (smokey mow)
Agree with most of the above posts. IMO buy something old but looks , when I was 17 I learnt a lot about cars by fixing the problems on my own, and spent many lunchtimes at college making spotlamp brackets and the like in the CDT workshops. The majority of us had 10-15 year old cars MK1 fiestas mainly modified to look like GT's and XR2's, I had a Renault 11 some even had classics like Mk2 Cortina's and escorts. Paul Ash
17 + new car = are you insane ? Have you checked out the insurance costs these days? My son started learning to drive this week. I made him save up for the purchase of the car (£1400) This way he will apreciate it worth & hopefully look after it The insurance quotes ranged from £2700 - 6K on a 1.1ltr 2002 Citreon Saxo. Then I discovered it was due to the rear lights being Lexus style (previous owner had declared them) Refitted standard lights, & still the best quote I could get was £800 TPFT through Quinn. It is also advised to put the car in his/her name & for tehm to have their own insurance. I tried the other way i.e putting him on my insurance & again the quotes were horiffic. So my advice is by a old , small engined, un-modified car. Make sure they have a financial stake in it, and teach them that its not like "playstation" you dont have 10 lives & can bounce off the armco's Good luck
Blatman
BL Mini. Nippy, good handling, seats 4(ish) and it should be (relatively) cheap to insure via the specialists
KerryS
We'll have my mother-in-law's Vauhall Agilla up for sale soon. With a 900cc 3-cylinder engine you'd be hard done by to get a speeding ticket But I assume insurance for a 17 yr old on it would be normal high cost rather than astronomic. Not that any 17 yr old would want to be seen in it.......

speedy jon
pug 106 i bought as my first car. loved it. had it intill i thought i was a rally expert and went down the lanes near my home in the snow and hand brake turned it into the only curb on the whole road and ripped the rear wheel off. was going good uptill that point i bought the car for £250 and spent a few quid sorting out a few little things and my parents paid for the insurance and was £1300 3rd party fire theft. i
