Zetec Sumps

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I know that if you use a 2 litre zetec then the sump needs to be modified to a shallower one. If you use the 1.8 litre zetec then I think you can use the original sump without modification. The question is can you get a 1.8 sump and fit it to a 2 litre engine. If the answer is you can then is this a cheaper option than getting the 2 litre sump modified?

Will the fitting on the 1.8 sump be straightforward or will baffles have to be fitted to prevent oil surge. Any advice appretiated.

Help please!!!!

Thanks.

I would strongly recommend a baffled sump chat to Paul Dunnell they can supply you with a sump that is going to save you engine. Money spent now will be money well spent. Cornering g`s in you Westfield are going to cause oil serge/starvation. :t-up:Dunnell

If you use the 2.0l zetec then you should use the following parts from the 1.8l zetec from the escort/fiesta.(if you want to use the ford parts bin.)

* sump & associated oil pick up pipe.

* water pump & pulley.

westfield will be able to give you part no.s for the alternator, starter & clutch etc.

The 1800 sump is still off a transcerse installation and will not be baffled correctly.  Get a bit enthusiastic (not hard) and something will get starved of oil.

you definately need a shallow baffled sump. The 1.8 sump will fit the 2.0 but as said it is still not baffled for longitudinal engine mounting.

i got mine done at plays-kool at a reasonable rate...

As an alternative (more expensive) consider the Raceline cast wet sump. This has the following advantages:-

1. Correctly baffled for in line applications

2. Increased capacity - 5 litres

3. Reduced height

4. Cooling fins built into casting

5. Finger filter for additional oil safety

6. Not just a potentially brittle 'cut and shut' modification but a custom designed casting.

Raceline Sump

I have NO connection with Raceline other than being a satisfied customer!

The only trouble with the raceline sump, is it is taller than the modified westfield one. But in all other respects, it should be much better (not that there's a problem with the Westfield one).

Hi Ross,

Yes, that is correct, I seem to recall that the Westfield sump is a little bit shorter but it is still a 'cut and shut' item although I know that lots of people have them and like them.

However, for the extra money (I know that is a touchy subject on this BBS but is does prove that Westfield are by no means always the expensive option!;) I feel that the Raceline sump is a nicer option. If, however, clearance is the sole objective, the Westfield version would be a better choice.

For you girlies out there, you may like to know that the Raceline sump has 'wings' .......... hope Steppenwolfess doesn't see this .....

The raceline on does not have the timing mark datum cast into it as per the Dunnell one which is better than the Westfield one for a few reasons.

Sump try this.£252.63 inc vat plus postage Dunnell.Sump 2 try this £421.83 :0 inc vat plus postage Raceline.

Race line sump looks the dogs dangly bits but a bit pricey. Must look great though when you get run over by someone who has one. I am not disputing the quality of the raceline sump just a bit too expensive for my liking. I have had my Dunnell sump on for four and a bit years now and have not had any problems with crack due to flying stones ect :t-up:    ;)

Thanks a lot guys for some useful tips. It looks like a Dunnell sump for me, I don't fancy starving the engine of oil, Dunnell sump would then look like a cheap option.

Unfortunately, Steppenwolfess saw my comment re 'wings' and just ran me over in my own car ..... you're right though, it does look cool from underneath but those cooling fins smart some ....
