Julian Posted February 10, 2002 Share Posted February 10, 2002 Does anyone have any experience of taking a crossflow out of a Westfield, but leaving the gearbox in situ? I have to change a clutch, and would rather not get the interior of the car out as well! It seems sooooo much easier to leave the gearbox alone!, but is there enough clearance? Buzz Billsberry Posted February 10, 2002 Share Posted February 10, 2002 Hi Julian Just take the whole lot out, its much easier, a better working environment, no knuckle rash!! plus its and extra 3 bolts to undo ( G/box mountings) plus a gear stick. Trying to line up the engine and gearbox on re-installation will be a nightmare unless yr lucky like me... it went straight on to the shaft!!.Thats my luck done 4 the millenium!! plus it will give u a chance 2 checkover fuel lines cabling etc that live in the tunnel plus give it a good clean!! mexico Posted February 11, 2002 Share Posted February 11, 2002 I removed ZETEC and left gearbox behind, it was a pain lining back up but a major advantage in leaving the interior alone and if I had to do it again would leave box behind. I have removed X-flow engines from numerous Mk 1 escorts and always leave the box. Westfieldman Posted February 11, 2002 Share Posted February 11, 2002 I have had my Zetec in and out far toooo many times and have allways left the box in just put some rubber hose or padding on the u shape bracket under the box this helps line it up again to make it easier remove most of the ancillaries from the engine. ian crocker Posted February 11, 2002 Share Posted February 11, 2002 This is always an emotive subject. I have taken out a xflow from an SE and we left the 'box in the car. It is a doddle on the xflow as the bellhousing bolts are so easy to reach. I would do it that way. I also leave the 'box in on my V8 even though it is much harder to separate from the engine. Those people that find it difficult to reassemble should invest a couple of quid in a clutch alignment tool - much easier to get it right first time.
