I bought a car in early March last year near Leeds and live in deepest West Sussex so don't let distance put you off if it's the right car.....

I was looking for a Westfield last year and there seemed to be many more advertised in the March to May period than earlier. I found Autotrader website the best for leads on cars that were still available. The magazines seemed to have lots of adverts for cars that were already sold. At least the ones I wanted were.

I bought a 1991 CVH engined SEi with cycle wings, RAC rollbar, 15in alloys for 5.5k and it seemed like a reasonable deal. The best fun with your clothes on, ever.

The ones that were under 5k needed lots of work.

Re Terry Nightingale - very helpful and the prices last year were in the 6 to 8 k range for the cheapest ones. He was going to be my long stop if I didn't find one elsewhere.

I am down south too, near Petersfield, so if you want to chat or look at a car up close with no pressure to buy (cos I ain't selling) then get in touch.  email to david.restell@btinternet.com

Hi Chris :)

AFAIK my car is an 1800 with twin Dellorto carbs but it also has a Ford Motorsport alloy head on it. It's rumoured to be a stage 3 head but it hasn't been off yet to check capacity or head spec.

Re: performance..

People keep asking me how fast it goes.....I don't know I have never run out of throttle or acceleration till it gets to about 80. Let's just say I have been in some fast cars in my life and this one accelerates better than all of them. It has more than enough power to embarrass me if I use it unwisely.

The really thrilling bit is winding throught the country lanes on a sunny afternoon between 30 and 50mph using the brakes and the cornering to their full potential. Great fun  :D  :D  :D

The weight is so low compared to a modern saloon that even 100 bhp would give good performance, and then more gets better.

Good luck in your search.

Chris,

Here is a useful web page containing a list of kit car dealers:

Kit Car Links

And here is one to Hallmark cars, thay are in London and although they specialise in Cobra's they usually have one or two Westfields in stock.  In my experience they tend to sell Westfields in the £5K - £8K bracket, and are very friendly people to talk to, I certainly got lots of free advice.

I didn't get around to visiting them because the chap I spoke to said the type of car I was looking for (circa £12K) was more in the Terry Nightingale territory and so he gave me their details - can't say fairer than that!

Hallmark Cars

Hope this is of some help,

Jon

I bought a car from Hallmark (a cobra) and gave it back after a week. The thing looked very nice but was a mechanical mess! Ended up nearly taking them them court, got most of my money back but they still owe me!

Lessons learnt - don't buy a car from a 'second hand Essex car dealer' - because thats how they behaved - avoid them.

Regards

John

In regard to Terry Nightingale. I called them up to cancel my appointment due to looking at a car in south london (the one I bought).  Terry asked whether it was red or blue.  I said red and he said 'Oh yes I know the car I have looked at it and we turned it down'.  I asked why and he refused to tell me, after chatting with the owner it was because Terry offered him 2.5k under what it was worth.  Thanks for the seed of doubt shame I concluded it was :arse:

Got to say that I bought mine from Terry Nightingale in June and OK, I probably paid a bit over the odds - but I got a warranty, FSH, complete build record and history on the car, and have had almost no trouble at all with it, just one small electrical fault, that's all.  In fact, I took it to a rolling road (1.6 CVH, standard cam and lifters with 2 x DCOE40s, 126 BHP at the wheels and solid 120ish lbs torque) and the owner complimented me on what a good car it was mechanically and appearance wise.  Some of us prefer a bit of peace of mind when buying a used motor, and Terry has always been there to answer my questions and give advice when I call him.  You pays your money, you makes your choice, but on the strength of my baby, I'd defend Terry Nightingale completely.  He does a lot of good work at races and shows too, and for heaven's sake, he's a businessman, of course he's trying to make money, how do you think he survives?  Anyway, good luck.

Thanks for the links and the advice.  Ive never yet met a car dealer that ive thought anything of - and if anyone thinks they are getting peace of mind by buying through a dealer is kidding themselves - you still need to take a good look at it mechanically, most dealers buy a car, clean and wax it and stick it on the forecourt - they may fix things if you point them out, but thats it - and your paying 2K over the top for the priviledge!!!   Having said that though - i would still buy from a dealer if it was the car i wanted.

I think private is really my only option though, as my budget is at the bottom end - i more likely to pick up a decent one for 6K privately than from a dealer.
