Blatman
De Dion rear eh? You sure.................?? I'm fairly sure that if you have a grp body, it ain't a pre-lit, (pre lit = cars produced before c******m sued. One of the clauses was that Westfield couldn't use ally to construct cars, hence all "post lit" cars are GRP.) and I doubt an ally body would fit anything other than the (pre lit) chassis it was designed for. The door aperture is a completely different shape for starters........ The chassis number could be on a small chassis crossmember under the gearbox tunnel. If you find it, phone the factory with it and find out exactly what it is and when it was produced.
chazpowerslide
Hi Blatman, yes it's a pre-lit. I undrestand that the earliest pre-lit cars were Triumph Spitfire based and had ali clad spaceframes(guy in stowmarket has a very early prelit [chassis 7 or something] that is ali clad and A serise powerd).Westfield then changed to GRP bodies and Ford running gear which is when C******m got a bit paranoid. I understand that the ford based pre-lit cars had some odd features like an off centered (transversly) steering rack leading to differing ammounts of lock side to side (and s**t loads of bump steer) due to a lack of development time as the cars had to be re-designed after the legal action by C******m, hence my planned mods to the front end of RRG to the later spec to get over these issues. The De-Dion rear is an adaptation of a design by M.K. Engineering modified to take disc braked Seirra hubs and modded driveshafts to fit the Escort axle width rear end of the car so it will be a little unusual to say the least. Now, where's my angle grinder gone............... Nick M
Incidentally, the one in Stowmarket, if it's the one I'm thinking of, is more like a Lotus 6 or a *very* early 7 than a c******m. It's a *really* lovely little car and the only one of it's type that I've seen.
melf
Being a resent owner of o pre-lit I was asking similar questions. According to the “Westfeild Story Book” that Farther Christmas bought me this year. There were two pre-lit models, the first was called the “Seven” Produced 1983-86. Aluminum Bodied with rear GRP Wings !! Total Built 132 ( I suggest this is sold as Kits, I wonder how many ever made it to the road). Engine was a BMC 4 Series, Midget 1297 or 1588 Ford X flow or 1220/1460 Coventry Climax. The second, according to the book, was the “Seven SE” 1986-88, GRP Bodied. Number Produced 604. Engine 1297 or 1588 X Flow. Hopes this helps, I can’t vouch for any of the info myself “Its only what I have read” and I prefer to drive my seven SE then read about it. If you want a copy of the book is avalible from the factory, lots of pics.
