Removing the seats

Recommended Posts

Right, I need to remove the seats in my car so that I can change the rear dampers. Only problem is that I can't get the b*******s out. I've undone the four bolts under the car holding the seat in, but I can't get the seat out because the harness is in the way at the sides of the seat, and I can't get to the bolts holding the harness in place because the seat is in the way (catch 22). It must come out, because it went in. Anyone got any suggestions?

If you look at this photo:

Photo of seats

You can see the plastic thingys each side of the seat that the harness is coming out of.

If the harnesses don't actually go through the seat, then I have no idea!! It's possible that the seat runners (at least, they look like seat runners) have had some electrolytic action with the ally floor, and are just stuck.......If the seats are adjustable then you should be able to get the shocks out without removing the seats. Put the bolts in from the rear when you re-assemble ;)

If the harnesses do go through the seats, then undo them...

It may just be that you aren't pulling hard enough, or you'r missed a hidden fixing somewhere.

Disclaimer:

If you wreck your seats/floor/harnesses/anything else in trying to remove the seats, the above is for advice only. You are responsible for your own actions  :0

Hi,

As my friend Blatman says, the runners are probably just stuck. Try and spray some release compond down them and attempt to work it in. That's what I had to do with mine.

4 bolts attach the seat to the floor, and it is quite possible that the washers and floor panel have "glued" together with wear, salt and other bits of objet-dart that come with the English road system :sheep:

The harness bolts should then be visible and can then be undone, carpets removed and then you can start the fun stuff

Hope this helps,

Noel :)

Paul, you could try this and see how you get on.

Assuming the seat can't move because of the harness lap straps, undo the 4 bolts from underneath and wrestle the bolts clear of the floor.  The try and rotate the back of the seat forward using the harness straps as your pivot point, i.e. as the seat back goes forward, the front of the seat moves back along the floor.

Try de-adjusting the harness as far as they'll go, although it looks like it's the adjustors holding the seats in place, not the fact that they're too tight.

The runners are fine, and I can lift the seat up slightly once the 4 bolts under the car are removed.

Nick - I see what you are getting at, and it might just work. I can push the runners back under the seat and then I should be able to pivot the seat forward and get to the harness bolts.

Once I've managed to get the seat out, is there anything I can do with the harness adjustors so that (a) this process is easier in reverse and (b) I can actually move the seat forwards and backwards afterwards, so SWMBO can also drive the car?

Try :

- Westfield - various options

- Cobra - Roadster 7

- Europa specialist spares - they do a couple of options

- c******m Tillet ones - bit pricey though

- make some 2 pack foam ones - light, but you'd need "his 'n' hers" seats.
