Let the build commence

At the risk of showing my complete incompetence and thus blowing away any semblance on credibility that I may (or may not) have earned on these hallowed pages I thought I'd share the build of my Narrow SE with you guys.

The other reason for starting the thread is that it might just encourage me to pull my finger out and get cracking with it

Apologies for the re-post of the first set of piccies from the other thread but I thought they'd be a good intro.

Here are a few pics of what I've been up to over the last few months.

I'll get round to adding pics as I have time.

So to begin with, engine and gearbox mounts and chassis.

I Had to take the chassis back to the coates yesterday (5am) start and while it was away I re-built the axle and fitted an ally lid to my Quaife T9

Ally lid on T9, this is a heavy duty straight cut close ratio 5 speeder.

IMG_8014.jpg

Axle case as it came back from the coaters, plenty of sand from the blasting still got in despite the covers.

IMG_8016.jpg

3.44 slippy diff, re-built and set up by Phil at Road And Race Transmissions, top bloke, he recommended the settings, I paid the cash and I let him get on with it it......

IMG_8018.jpg

Diff ready to go in, ot took ages to clean the sand out of the casing, a combination of Gunk and a pressure washer did the trick

Nearside back plate and half shaft ready to go in.

I'm re-making ally panels today, the aim is to have them all cut, drilled and ready for coating on Monday.

Good to see things progressing Chaz, keep it coming  :t-up:

Progress reports are useful, it allows us to alter the odds on when the build will be actually be completed  :D

Today I have mainly been making all the ali panels.

I had hoped that I could re-use most of the ali panels so as to make life a but easier bit I I have changed so much on the chassis most of the existing panels don't fit

So, today I have made: off side and near side floor panels, tranny tunnel sides front and rear, tranny tunnel top front mid and rear, scuttle closing pannell, driver/passenger foot well panels.

The seat bulkhead pannell will be modified to fit as will the exterior side panels and interior side panels.

Tranny tunnel panles

Scuttle panel.

Engine bay floor (holes to be cut for the sump once the motor goes in)

One piece floor pan near andf off side.

IMG_8031.jpg

To give you some idea, this panel for the  off side tranny tunnel front took an hour to make.

IMG_8032.jpg

Chassis all snug in the garage prior to alcohol intake dictating that work should stop foor the day.

IMG_8033.jpg

I have spent 12 hours in the garage today and still not finished the ali work.

The target is to have the chassis plumbed' wired and paneled by the close of play Monday.

The Ali (hopefully) will be completed and coated by close of play Monday.

Need sleep..................................

If you've got a compressor you can borrow my air riveter, should speed up the paneling.  Hope we didn't slow you down too much today, let me know how you get on with the bushes.

I have an air compressor I don't need, so  if you do want to use Scruffy's air riveter and need one your welcome to borrow it for a while.

Well, Sunday was a bit of a write off in car terms, we had a great post Stilton Cheese Run BBQ at Hugh's (Scruffy The First) and the normal weekly shop in the morning left about 3 hours on the car.

So, I finished both foorwell end panels.

FrontfootwellPanels.jpg

I modded the old rear bulkhead panel to accomodate the widened tranny tunel.

Recycledandmoddedrearbulkheadpanel2.jpg

And took some engine component porno pics.......

TTV Flywheel, about 4.5 Kgs.

You can see where the weight is saved on this, I particulary like the lazer cut disc for the for the VR sensor to pick up on.

I'm looking into getting a transparent bell housing because it's too nice to be hidden away.

Today has been a better day, I had hoped to have the chassis paneled, plumbed and wired by now but it's taken ages to cut, drill and shape the ali panels.

So today I have all but finished the ali panels (including cutting the holes for the loom, seat belt mounts ect.

What wonderfull things Q Max cutters are.

The last thing I did was to start drilling the panels/chassis prior to coating.

I'd like to thank Hugh for the loan of his Air riviter Graham for the loan of the compressor and Sam for sorting out the brake pipe flaring tool.

Drivers side floor showing welded in bosses for a removable brace (that fits below the bell housing ans ties in the inner sides of the footwells.

Flooroffside.jpg

And the drilling begins, I'm using high quality drill bits for accruacy on this.

I have a selection of 5.0mm and 4.0mm rivits, the drill bits are 5.3mm and 4.3mm respectivly.

DrillingDriversidefloor.jpg

And just to prove that I made all the panels (Marked out by hand, cut with a jigsaw, filed to ect) a small pile of cuttings...................
