Rory's Dad Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 just need to sort some perspex wind deflectors out now, not keen on the big sidescreens Ive just bought You'll find that they'll make a big difference. Rory's Dad Quote
JeffC Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 just scared the s**t out of swmbo as I bust out laughing Quote
JeffC Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 just been up road with screen on , no doors, its no better for draught than the aeroscreen was Quote
Pilot Pete Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 just been up road with screen on , no doors, its no better for draught than the aeroscreen was I remember dads car with the windscreen, it was b****y awful! I think with sidescreens you should see a difference. Quote
JeffC Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 O/T but is Og on holiday Gents think he may be down Southampton colletcting a Tr6 Quote

Morbius Posted June 4, 2008 Posted June 4, 2008 Face it the windscreen wipers are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard! Not so on mine. Having done a lot of driving in the wet to get to/from places like Cadwell and Oulton because I didn't want to write off the money spent on a track day and I can't afford a trailer, I would say its pretty much like being on a motorbike. In the pi$$ing rain they work fine, it is only when dealing with spray full of road grime that they start to give up the ghost like a bike helmet visor does. I hate having the hood up (largely because of the cr@p visibility at traffic lights), but I hate being wet even more, so I will probably not go for an aeroscreen, even though the drag effects above about 60mph are significantly higher, and really kick in about 90. IIRC from my fluid dynamics at Uni, drag goes up with somewhere between the square and the cube of the speed, depending upon how smooth the flow is. What that means in practice is that a 50%hike in power to weight will give you about a 14% hike in speed all other things being equal. Sticking a 'king great flat board almost vertically upwards in the middle of the car is a pretty damn good air brake, guaranteed to push the flow towards turbulent, as evidenced by the buffeting most on here have described. properly shaped 'wind deflectors' actually smooth out the airflow reducing the turbulence and moving it further back. I have got my westy up to about 110 eventually (won't say where or when in case the boys in blue are trawling this), whereas on the rolling road it got to 112 in fourth at peak power significantly more quickly, giving a theoretical 125 or so in fifth if I had no drag to contend with. The car actually uses less fuel with the hood on since it was remapped. The hood bows upwards to meet the airflow off the top of the screen. I am getting an average of 32 to the gallon with SWMBO and a load of luggage on board, that's better than 160 miles between 22 litre fill-ups. Quote
boblog Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Take it the pipes starts to smoke when the engine pops Quote
N_J Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I was going to post the same original question but been beeten to it. Ive got a screen that got peppered on a track day and wont now pass an MOT so was thinking of going down the aero screen route, but this thread has confused me even more (it doesnt take much) I get a load of bufferting without doors over 40mph and cos I'm blind without glasses, they just bob around my nose making it worse. Have been told on may occasions that the air flow is much better with aero hence the thought (plus cost of replacing screen !). Quote
Norman Verona Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Jeff, if you're getting a strong draught with an aero (same as screen) then it's not doing what it's supposed to. I can drive mine, without goggles up to 60/70 mph. I choose to wear the goggles for protection. The wind is deflected above my head. When I had a screen (I never used the sidescreens) I would end up with blurred vision and neck ache due to the wind buffeting. Quote
