1989 SE

Got talked into buying 1989 SE by a mate last year :)  Anyway 1 divorce later, finally getting around to doing something about it.

Its never been put together, its got the engine and rear axle from mk2 escort to go, but dont know what they're like!  Anyway, what i really want to know is, can i use an 89 1.6 sierra as a donor car? and will it all ft without much hammering, welding and swearing?

Hi to you all, been reading all the posts, lmho (i think)

any advice gratefully received.

what have you got and what are you short of?

- Engine: 1600 X/flow motor was typical for this car ( wot i've got) but other motors will fit with a bit of work e.g. Mondeo 2.0 Vauxhall 2.0.  -very well worth the effort IMO. The 1.6 Sierra engine is not worth bothering with and  personally I wouldn't actively seek out a x/flow

- Gearbox was typically Escort/cortina/Rs2000 4speed.  - but the type 9 from your Seirra would fit with mods to the mounting point and a chassis x member; and would be a good choice.

- front suspension uses cortina uprights, but alloy repalcement are available.

- Rear axle is an Mk1/2 Esort item with trailling arm brackets welded in place  ( look under a passing Escort to get the idea). You need one of these and you need the brackets fitting.  Get a 3.89 or 3.54 ratio. Might pick up a unit already modded.

** Would be worth visiting a local club meet and seeking out someone with one of these cars to have a good crawl around **

Personally I'd seek out a Mondeo enfgine ( say £150) , get the sump lowered and fix it to a type 9 gearbox -you will need to modify mounts from a wide body car for the engine and also sort out the gearbox mount. You need weber carbs for the engine and some sort of ignition system  as you won't be using the mondeo EFI and ECU. Budget £2000 to do this tho..

- There is probably lots on the FAQ's about these sorts of fitments, and look around other members web sites for clues.

Your options may be dictated by £££ so check that out first and work out a budget and wot you can afford and wot your capabilities are- for example an SE would go very nicely on a Mk2 Escort 1.3 Engine and box -might get lucky and find such a combination and it would drop right in!

Don't dismiss selling the parts you have and buying a complete car -this could be far cheaper

My car is a 1990 model, likely to be the same as yours.

good luck !!

If the Sierra engine is a Pinto, forget it. If it's a CVH, that'd be OK.

Type 9 5 speeder will fit fine, if it's a 4 speeder it'll fit but I wouldn't bother. That's about it for donor. Ebay the rest or flog it for scrap...

Hum.....what else did you get with it? Has it already got the hubs, uprights and breaks from the front? or is it a chassis and an axle?

If you really have nothing, the factory have made SDV, single donor vehical cars, which used the sierra hubs, uprights etc....The narrow and wide use the same pick up points, so may be these will fit. I would however add that all that is jecture so I would call the factory to ask/check.

Not sure but the sierra callipers (M16) will probably be OK, not sure about the disks though, unless the above point is correct.

The axle you have, do you know if it has already been modified by the factory to fit into a westfield? The factory weld on two vertical mounts to the rear side that the rear trailing arms and panhard rod bolt too. You will need this doing.

Looking around carefully will net you a complete engine with all ancillaries to make it run, but it will be an older design as people swap to new 16valve type stuff. You ahve already been offered a x-flow and I suspect that many a decent pinto exists as owners swap to Duratec versions. Whilst not that last word in power/refinement or oil tightness, they are however very cheap and very convienient to get you motoring. Would be worth considering before commiting a fortune on something newer that you may not like at the end of the build?
