Tigger Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Isn't the point of the police to prevent crime ? Now that's an interesting point. I believe that the constitutional role of the police is to locate lawbreakers and offer them to the judicial system for the evidence to be considered and (if guilty) an appropriate punishment to be given. Not to actualy prevent crime in the first place. Our society is subjected to ever increasing numbers of rules. For the police to move from catching to preventing criminals/criminal behaviour would require a dramatic change in the relationship between the government and the populace, as well as each of us acting with a much greater sense of personal responsibility. If this were to happen, I think we'd end up with a much better society. Brian Taken from the National Policing Plan here, it states: The core role of the police is to prevent and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. Moreover they are then allowing drivers of speeding cars to continue to be a danger to themselves and other road users, don't think that it's an argument that I would like to test in court but I do think that it is a fair point if the point of these is to change people driving habits and not just to raise cash.... I agree with Neilb, by just setting covert cameras, all they are doing is raising cash letting the motorists continue to break the law and possibly cause accidents. Surely this is the wrong way to go about it Tiggs Quote
steve_m Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 There's a high number of cars with false plates in the south east, mainly caused by the congestion charge in london I'd guess. This will only get worse if the police are using covert scameras like this. Quote
Blatman Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 North Wales is nowhere near the South East... thank goodness... Quote

neilb Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Just wondering how long it will be before someone has an accident shortly after being caught by one of these hidden cameras goes on to sue the police for failing in there duty of care to prevent an accident Quote

wipper Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Is this "National Love The Police day" today? Never seen so many pro-police posts!!! Thoughts I'd logged on to the wrong forum!! We all know the Police are just milking us for what little we have left after filling our tanks! Quote
Norman Verona Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 The police are subject to the same laws we all are. They cannot put false plates on their vehicles. The Police are not raising cash by the use of speed cameras, the politicians are. If you are speeding then you are breaking the law. Therefore to isn't realy "prevention" it's catch drivers who break the law. It's no different to being caught by a traffic car other than the cameras in question are covert. The root of the problem is the unappropriate speed limits being set by local authorities. Not accusing anyone but when a child is knocked down by a speeding car in a surbaban side steet there is an outcry, and rightly so. Having been caught speding, probably more than anyone here, I've never complained. I know the rules and I know the penalties for breaking them. After all that, better have a couple of Quote
