3.9 rev limits

I have recently bought a 3.9 Sd1 (around 1994) with 40 K on the engine.

Apparently it is completely standard.

I would be keen to know roughly at what revs I am going to start destroying the engine! So that I can avoid doing it !

If it really is completely standard, there won't be any point revving it near the limit as peak power is probably about 4.5 K

6000 is safe, my 3.9 developed peak power at about 6.2 and I regularly took it over 6 without problems, standard bottom end.

official rev limit is 5800, 6000 is okay. Absolute momentary maxiumum is 6200RPM. The first point of failure above this will be the rockershaft. Like Graham says no point revving higher with the standard cam in anyway.

It won't be from an SD1 either, or at least not an original. They finished in '87 and only used a 3.5.

Have to admit to being a bit confused about the engine's origins! The more research I do the more confused I become. Told:- Land rover; range rover... and one site says the number hails from an automatic range rover???  Will let you know!

PS I do know that from a letter to the original builder from LandRover:- "Land Rover Ltd built the engine at Solihull, about late 1989."

Cant think where I got the '94 bit from... !

Mine has an 'intermediate' 3.9 (circa '95) with fuel injection and the standard rev limit is 5250.
