Hello all .

Looking to buy a Westfield in the very near future .

Very keen on the Cosworth Westfields I have seen recently .

Any views on them .I have never had this type of car before ,but have had some performance vehicles,eg Saphire Cosworth 4wd,Subaru WR1 etc ,plus Fireblade.

I have done a few trackdays on 2 and 4 wheels and this is what I would be buying for now.

Are there many Cos Westfields about ,any owners on here etc .

Views and tips ,pics would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Check out www.g2.nu/chris/westie for lots of info on L16COS which is the original cosworth westie.

I'm assuming here that you're talking about a turbo installation as IMO a natasp cossie is a waste of time, you're far better off starting with a duratec or vauxhall engine if you want natasp.

My car is great in that it's easy to live with pootling around town but is an absolute beast if you want it to be, with so much power you can afford to have plenty of creature comforts which makes long distance driving a (relative) joy.   The cars you have already mentioned are all 4WD and you can drive them like a car video game, a 2wd car with less than half the weight will be a real shock to the system and for sure you will be slower round the track initially than in a scoob although it will feel an awful lot faster.

Now for the downsides, big power means big costs and turbos mean lots of heat and plumbing related issues to deal with.  L16COS was the factory demonstrator back in '93 so when I got her in 2001 she had already gone through a lot of development before I rebuilt her, in the last 5 years it has been a constant development process, which is rewarding, frustrating and expensive in roughly equal measures.  If you end up with a cossie powered car I can you skip out most of the development work but you're going to need to be prepared to write the cheques and get your hands dirty :)

Personally I'd suggest you get a zetec powered and aeroscreened car and run that for a year or so before deciding that you need a fan assisted YB :)

Thanks cng1 .

Some good stuff there to look at .

I think the turbo cosworth is the one for me .I realise it will be a handfull and more more demanding to drive than my previous cars, but thats what its all about, hone my driving skills to the car on the track ,starting somewhere nice and wide like Elvington !!

Just in the process of releasing some funds and then I will see if I can find one in my price range.

Again thanks for the info .

Anybody else got experience with one of these ?

What do you want to know?  As chris says, the extra power and torque mean touring and pootling round town are easy, with massive overtaking grunt.  Not driven it on track yet but I am planning on doing a training day with andy walsh and then some airfield days.  Pretty easy to drive on the road with getting the back out pretty easy and controllable.  Running a mappable ecu which as chris will tell you makes the power delivery much better, it also allows me to switch between boost settings - I normally run 240bhp but can have 265 at the flick of a switch.  If I want more power its really new turbo time, as although I could run more boost the temperatures of the charge air would start to get out of hand as the boost runs off the edge of the compressor map.

I'm having a few problems with the cooling since removing the heater (as much use as a chocolate fireguard really as the turbo does a nice job of roasting your feet) so now need to fit an oil cooler to compensate - its never ending, not to mention the exhaust I've been meaning to replace ever since SVA.

I did however just drive to lemans and back 2 up with the cambridge area and had a lot of fun, despite the rain.

No specific questions to be honest,I am just trying to get a feel from owners of this type of car ,as to ease of ownership ,reliability ,fun ,etc .

It would not be doing massive mileage to be honest and I am fairly mechanically sympathetic to my cars .Warm up ,cool down etc ,etc but I dont particularly have the time to start fabricating parts or anything like that ,so I am after road /track ready that just needs looking after .(I am a lazy cnunt ).

Thats probably a good thing, I smashed my diff last tuesday (2 days before leaving for lemans) due to a minor mounting issue - easily overlooked and would probably never caused a problem in a normal westy but let go with a very loud bang launching the car sideways out of a junction.

If your not prepared / able to do work yourself, upgrades and maintenance will be expensive, as most garages wouldn't know where to start and the specialists will be expensive.

I run a turbo cosworth. Didn't build it but is now 10yrs old. Running stage 1 around 270bhp. 2wd engine, 2wd intercooler, Davies Craig water pump and controler. Never runs hot even in traffic. Kicks ass including bikes. Can e-mail photos. Sure their are lighter cars, probably better suited engines etc, but I love the thrill the cossie gives. I came from fast bikes to the world of westfields and don't miss them one bit.

Gary Bunn and Chris Elworthy run NA Cossies. I dont know where you get the idea that they are a waste of time from. They have more grunt than is practically usable  :0

As a nat asp YB owner I raised an eyebrow to this one.  Still it's his opinion and entitled to it no matter how wrong he is. :p

I'd be interested to hear how he draws this conclusion. ???
