Generally unimpressed

however I would do same for anyone else that has firstly contributed with help and guidance for others and not merely made their first posting as a wanted advert

Be careful Mark - that comment is pretty much opening the floodgates for any one of the regular boardroom contributors who have been rebuffed in the past, from arguing the same thing!!

I do feel a bit sorry for new posters being flamed for not having read the rules from cover to cover and posting 'wanted' ads - of course they want things if they're new to it.

Tim - if bunnies aren't your thing, you could always put discreet details of what you are wanting in your signature line

My personal view; I think to get things into perspective:

1). Joining a new forum is like meeting any group of new people in real space, you need to take it slow and get to know the culture and initially try to do everything right ( if you should join say a dart club you would go in quietly buy a few drinks and get to know people)

2). Forums like this are run by voulenteers, who deserve encouragement  for  their efforts. They don't get paid and they try to do their best. I expect it takes a lot of time and I wouldn't do it.

3). The policy of "no adds" if you are not a member is a good one.  The Forum is run by WSCC and every effort should be made to recruit new members whiltst supporting the car stuff.

I've  been a member since early this year and have found people to be helpful and encouraging.... and I've made mistakes such as giving all my car detials out and trying to post an add before I joined ( never read the rules).. I was hit fairly hard,  but its all part of a "new group" thing.

No ads for non-members is a perfectly good policy...

Misconstruing technical queries as ads because you know somebody wants a part is a bit off.

How many technical queries couldn't be read as wanted posts?

i.e.  'My rad is broken, how do I fix it?' could be read as 'I want a new rad, or, 'Please sell me a rad'

Where do you draw the line?

You'll also find that most newbies, like me, will only stumble across a resource like this place when we are looking for something - be that parts or technical information.  Weeks of idle chat and forum foreplay would be nice, but answers to my immediate questions are better! ;):)

Just my 2p worth...  but..

I cant really get my head around the 'no-ads' thing in relation to cars for sale / wanted.

In this thread here we had someone actively looking to purchase a Westfield (effectively a Car Wanted ad) and getting good advice from Boardroom Members including some who actually had cars to sell. It seemed as good an example of a Club ethos as I can think of. And at the end of it the Club got a happy Westfield seller, a happy Westfield buyer and a new member.

I also cant get my head around the fact that that any Westfield owner with an actual Car to sell, or just spare parts to shift, would have to pay money to join the Club in order to advertise their items to a buch of folk who are more likely to be looking for such items than any other bunch of folk.

The same goes for someone someone, like the original poster, who appeared to be looking to buy something Westfield related which is surely to the benefit of someone with something Westfield related to sell and should be pretty irrelevant to most others.

It just seems slightly perverse to me but then again that is just one opinion.

The above isnt a real gripe. I enjoy reading the posts in the Boardroom and am often amazed at the level of knowledge and resource which is on offer and freely given. I also appreciate that you dont want to be bogged down with commercial postings, spam ads or the like and that every club/forum/organisation has its own rules.  However the Moderators have shown that they can moderate when they decide it appropriate.

Just a quick observation without getting involved in the minutiae....

TVR Car Club will only accept ads from members.....

Personally I look at it this way - if I have a "specialist" car to sell, then I don't want to pay to put it on Auto Trader and open myself up to all and sundry, far better to pay a small membership fee and then get a free ad in the place where enthusiasts will be "shopping"....

There are (I understand) two main reasons for this:

1. It is then seen as a tangible benefit to being a club member (along with all the others)

2. It gives the club some method of identifying the advertiser should there be any problems further down the line.

I agree, there are arguments for and against allowing anyone to post adverts. However, I think the system as stands does (generally) work well. There is some latitude given on occasion by the moderators, but generally this isn't (I trust) done to favour one set of individuals over another.

Out of curiosity.. to what end? A revocation of Membership if an item is not as described? An arbitration between a buyer and seller if there is a dispute? A Club Sanctioned feedback system?

ps.. not trying to be awkward, just even more confused now.

As for point 1. I appreciate what you are saying. My own thoughts are simply that a more tangible benefit would be to place the Westfield enthusiast in an environment where he is most benifited and I dont think the ad ban does this.

One reason I can think of is 'Someone on your forums has ripped me off. Tell me his name and address'

Obviously if they're a club member (and we were appropriately compelled into doing it) we could comply with this.

There are some people who will never join a club for many many reasons , though that does not mean they don't contribute in a possitive manor.

I have in the past been accused (rightly on one occation) of being negitive about the club, however i have also put into it over the years with advice ,the first group buy for the now famed caged cages , and the surrey bunch would agree that forum banter is somewhat amusing at times.

However i agree that people may find great benifit with being a club member but its not essential.

the forum being closed to mebers only would be bad , and i belive blatchat is the worse for it.

the for sale section being members only is not an issue but were for example a non member have a stonking class winning sprint car members may miss out on an advert placed here first.

the wanted section being members only (cars wanted) seems bizzare , surely you would purchase before wanting to become a member ?? ,

is not a closed shop for monthly meets and obviously a good place for prespective owners to go look i'm sure .

telling everyone to search all the time IS irritating as well as BECOME A MEMBER it might be an idea to realise not everyone wants to and whatever blatters says the search engine can have a mind of its own quite often as many have found .

There also seems to be a line whats good for sprinting and its nice to see a club with such a healthy sprint series ,is  always good for all track work , trackdays included, and thats not always the case ,though some of it was relevant .

however ............ one thing that knowbody can argue is theres not better car for all of us..............except maybe a caterham .................... or maybe one of those radicals ...........................or maybe a honda engined elise ................................... or a busa powered fury................................... or an porsche ............................... or a lambo.............................or a rarri........................... or .......or .........or......................  :p

I echo the sentiments of many of my fellow WSCC forum users, the place is invaluable as a source of information and 'wisdom'.  I found as a new member the whole thing was daunting and clicky and a few out there have a certain knack of peeing you off especial with the 'do a search comment',  but stick with us.  But be warned as ‘potster’ stated you do become addicted with upgrading and viewing the forum,  Have fun. :D

Do you guys not think that in the age of the Internet owners clubs have become a little irrelevant?

Before the advent of the Internet, web forums and mail lists, contacting like-minded people interested in  a minority hobby was difficult.

Now with the Internet this is not the case. Take the BEC list on Yahoo Groups for instance. I started that when I was waiting for my Megabusa kit, it now has over 1000 members to the list. Some contribute some don’t we have no structure or committee. We have however had track days, there is a trip to Le Mans each year, breakfast meets and we have had the odd group buy.

Don’t take this the wrong way as it is a genuine question but what does an organised club you have to pay for deliver above and beyond this?

As far as I can see the only difference is Westfield World ?

Cheers

Bazzer
