Other option... 2 litre Saab turbo 150 hp standard, 300 hp on E85 (Ethanol) To achive that you remap the ecu and go for larger injectors and higher capacity fuel pump. And not to mention the torque 500 nm... Maybe a litle to much in a Westy, or maybe not... ;)

That engine was not actually a black top, it was a silver top pained black (the things you learn over a few years or Westfield overship.

So the correct figures for my car are:

2l Zetec Silver top, Weber 45's, standard cams 165 bhp at the fly.

2l Zetec Black top, Weber 45's, standard cams 173 bhp at the fly.

Standard Midget 1275 donor = circa 60 bhp.

1380 offset bored with scatter cam and other goodies = circa 120bhp

Happy Medium = 90-100bhp

Mr Vizard's Big Yellow Book refers....

"Ultimate" 4AGE is probably the TRD prepared Formula Atlantic engine which makes 240bhp and is available in the US for about $15k. But the power is all above 8000 revs and (reputedly) it can't be made to tick over very well.

Toyota claim 160ps from the 'Silver top' 20v engine and 165ps from the (rare) 'Black top'. Both figures are generally believed to be optimistic, but they are very torquey little engines and represent quite cheap power, as they come with TBs as standard for £500-£600. There is, however, very little in the way of tuning goodies available in the UK   --  so the 20v engine is currently a bit of a cul-de-sac. (May change!wink.gif

Speaking from experience, the most usable power you are likely to get out of a phase 3 16v unit (without forced induction and/or spending really silly money) is about 190bhp.

Ive got a silver top 20v in my narrow body, it runs on an omex 600. admittedly i have a straight cut box on a 4.44 fd but the engine does pull very well, its been dyno'd at 159bhp.  They say that bolting on a supercharger on standard internals produces 220bhp!! Although slightly less power than the black top, the silver top is the one to go for, there cheaper for a start but also have stronger con rods and a manual cam tensioner. The black top throttle bodies are better though. Also there all alloy.

2.0L VX xe with 270 cams & GSXR TBs, omex 600 = 190 bhp (standard xe quoted at 150 bhp)

Yes, but not really in this country. (Not saying it's not been done over here, but as an enthusiast market, we don't seem to like turbo Sevens much).

Its been a more common option in Europe though, I'm sure one of the Westfield importers somewhere used to do it as a standard option. It's a tall motor though, which does give some clearance issues, seem to recall it being heavy too.

Sounds much like the SAAB-engine.

Not in brittain. Check (mainly in Sweden I guess and mostly due to availability and our bhp restrictions on a car)

Tall. Check. Need modified sump and V8 bonnet.

Heavy. Check.

I think mostly due to the bhp issues it is still a popular choice here. A heavy 7 can have 150bhp which is what you get from the, most commonly used, SAAB engine. And yet at almost no cost you can have close to 300 bhp once the car has been approved. The bhp rule in Sweden is 15kw / 100kg weight (dry weight plus aprox 100kg).
